You addressed "Mastodon" and I was merely pointing out it's not singular. You're talking about commercial metrics and that narrative is not fitting with Mastodon. There is no "life support". From the perspective of its users the network is thriving and it feels strange for someone pointing otherwise. After Twitter I have not seen such an active network. And it has nothing to do with the commercial metrics.

So I just ran a marathon.
My initial goal: "If the time started with 4, that would be nice". The real goal: "Finish".

I didn't run this for the time, I ran it to outdo myself. At the finish line when I saw my son and wife, I had a good cry. It all came out, all of those emotions. It's been a hell of a year, fighting death, trying to stay alive. This marathon and crossing the finish line means a lot to me in many ways. Training hasn't been easy and I've missed a few runs. But I did it! I can't believe it.
I knew in advance that nutrition was going to be a problem. As a nerd, I suck at eating. On Friday I had sushi and pasta, maybe that saved this marathon. Breakfast: protein bar, pre-workout shot, banana, marshmallows, sports drink. Way too light. Luckily, I left Powerade and four gels at the service station. For the last lap (10km) I saved 2 gels. I "hit the wall" surprisingly early on at 26km, that is when I started to get hungry. The pit stops helped a bit, got water and sports drink.
The pace stayed good for 30km, after that it was just survival. But I fuckin did it! 🔥
The weather was PERFECT by the way. Absolutely magical, 15 degrees Celsius and no rain, last 10km drizzle. As soon as I crossed the finish line, the skies opened up.
Oh, and it was nice to have the other side of the lake open for the race, it's been closed for a year.

Marathon preparing update: 3 nights to the race: Sleep is mediocre from 6 to 8 hours, I work too much and my eating is all over the place (constantly hungry, unhealthy snacks, most of the time I don't have the energy and don't know what the heck to eat - I don't cook).
Sounds worrying but this is the way I've been running long runs for 17 weeks. "Don't change anything" rule, I guess... 😅
Today I'm going to eat pizza Italian style. I love pizza.

I once again feel sad, insecure and restless. I have this thing called "the app unrest" (named the condition myself). A couple of times per week I go through dozens of different apps and try once again to find the best one of the category, even though I already currently use the best one, so far. I take notes on each of them or make changes to the existing notes.
Today I organized my digital notes, I have 3000+ of them. It took 4 hours. Yet I feel incomplete.
I hate myself sometimes.

I finally solved this Calendar issue! I contacted Apple Support and they said it's best to check the Login Items. And boy there is a lot of stuff. I noticed an app called TripMode I used on trips. It was running. This app blocks all traffic for selected apps. Calendar was selected. Damn, how stupid thing. It was not a broken Calendar app, it was other app interfering.
I need to clean my login items soon, because it's full of apps that I don't use.
I'm so happy Calendar works again.

I was able to chown it successfully via Recovery Terminal, got the calendars to show up. However, instantly got yet another, new, error message:

Any way to fix this? I can access to the folder via Finder though. Renaming it to Calendars.bak creates a new Calendar directory when I open it. "Get info" seems to indicate it is already owned by me.

I'm rarely helpless, but now I need help with my Mac Calendar.
Please don't suggest ditching Google Calendar, not a solution here.
Can't add Google account calendar to macOS calendar. Here are the errors I get when adding and account, trying to refresh or adding a manual CalDAV account. What's up with this? No blockers or firewalls should be present and Google Calendar works on other apps. Tried everything.
Any tips?

Fediverse pro tip: Re-boost your own content.
There is no algorithm. Posts are equal like they should be. It doesn't matter what you like, how many followers you are or how prominent you are as an "influencer". The time, moment, content, frequency and boosting are the only things that help your visibility here. It's a good thing.
It's funny that sharing function is almost obsolete in other places. Here it still serves a purpose.

Carefully re-tried Obsidian to replace Simplenote.
Pros:
- The graph view
Cons:
- I have thousands of files and problems with sync / slowness
- It's ridiculous you can't have special characters in titles (yes I know they are files, but it should be a no brainer to work)
- Can't pin notes to a list
- Still too many panels (on mobile when I mostly use the notes)
- Can't see excerpt in the note list
- The formatting still has those visual issues like bullets being too close to the text
I need a notes app that "just works". @npub1g6e…h2zd is not it.

I hate the trend of startups that are trying to do everything, because it's not possible. It will fail.
Why concentrate on everything and do a shitty job when you can do one thing and make it perfect? "One app for everything" is a doomed idea.

I dislike any code-like interface or clutter when I type my notes, I even hate markdown. Coding and writing text should be separated from each other. No IDEs in note taking for me, please. That approach wouldn't work for me, especially because I use many different operaring systems varying from Apple products to Linux. It needs to be simple, seamless and friction free.

Obsidian's panels are confusing (I want the note list as main and not behind a panel), it takes time to sync and I don't like dealing with files. Also if I recall correctly in Obsidian you need to have a title for notes?

I have about 10 000 notes in Simplenote. I love the app because it has least friction. Things like Notion, Evernote, Google Docs, Craft and even Obsidian are the worst, too much friction to add a simple note as a dump. I don't want to spend time on not writing, I mean in things like what to add as title, tags, folder, where to put it, how to format it... I just want to 1) open the app, 2) write a note, 3) forget about it.
Simplenote is 99% perfect, the notes can be without headings, the note list opens up as soon as you open the app. Simplenote has been my daily driver since 2008. 16 years worth of notes. I have a cron job that syncs all note changes to my git repository so I have my notes as txt files always backed up.
Simplenote's only gripe is that it's too simple. No formatting, they are just text files. I don't miss any features, but they don't seem to develop it any further, see this: https://github.com/Automattic/simplenote-electron/issues/2850#issuecomment-1285251706 - Sometimes I need a little formatting to make it easier to read. But I'm too late in the game to switch now. I don't want to leave all my notes behind over the years and importing them to an "organized" app would be too much work.

I reinstalled now and tried again. Here’s my results:
1. I first see ”Welcome to Peak” and Continue button on my watch
2. I press continue, then it instructs me to open the iPhone app, I do that
3. ”Restoring archive 6/6”
4. Vibrations and sounds 3 times, iPhone app shows a modal which quits
5. ”Open peak on your iPhone to continue” with a Continue button, continuous vibrations and sound notifications from that
6. I open the iPhone app, nothing happens, so I press the Continue button on my watch
7. I get the subscription options on my watch, I choose monthly and hit continue
8. I double click
9. Go back to step 5
10. Finally the watch app works

Katsoin myös, että Derekin palvelimella mastodon.ie on rate limitit tosi tiukalla, eli jos selaat paljon kuvia sieltä niin he blokkaavat hetkellisesti kuvan lataamisen. Nimittäin täälläkin näkyy noin sumeana.

It’s a bit of a stretch to say character limit is ”trying so hard to be X”. I completely disagree. It has nothing to do with that, especially because X character limit is still 280.
Most of the social media software in the Fediverse have mostly the same features and some more. Most of the microblogging platforms resemble X by their UIs. And that’s perfectly OK. Take my Bird UI for example, inspired by Twitter: https://github.com/ronilaukkarinen/mastodon-bird-ui

He literally states the challenges in the interview - it is technical:
"It is proving very difficult just to do the basics, particularly from a compliance and a privacy perspective. The standards we're held to are just different, based on our scale. (That's reasonable, that's not a complaint.) :skull360: We have now successfully upgraded to v4.3.0-alpha.4+mementomods-2024-06-30+pr30850 + Mastodon Bird UI 2.0.0rc38. The server has Mastodon Bird UI 2.0.0rc37 installed with no further changes at this time in the UI.
The branch is now synced and up-to-date and 238 commits ahead from the last version 2024-06-01.
This version contains some fixes to both Mastodon and Mastodon Bird UI. Most notably the new experimental hover cards feature is available for our instance.
As usual, please tell me about any strange things you may encounter with this Mastodon version. We're running bleeding edge after all.

Pidän erittäin hämmentävänä sitä, että suomalaiset somekonsultit yhä povaavat Mastodonin haihtumista ilman mitään totuuspohjaa tai varsinaista kokemusta Fediversumista. Kun numerot kuitenkin osoittavat, että avoimet someverkot ovat koko ajan kasvussa ja Meta kiinnostunut myös kehityksestä.

It's been somewhat a year since I last checked X for lulz, just to see the progress of the downfall. The personal exposure can't be more than a couple of minutes, because it's dangerous for one's mental health to see all that human decay and mistakes made in the feature set.
But, they actually have under replies a "Show probable spam" link instead of "Show more comments" link. And when you open it, they are not even spam, but more like "wrong opinions". Wtf.
Anyway, that's all about it. No good things left there. Nothing to see here, please disperse.

I’m a designer so I like my things pretty, which is a subjective matter. Your pretty is different from mine. Yet I also appreciate the CLI on runlevel 3.
If you see no problems in any of your setups, good for you. I see no greater problems in Apple’s products. So I guess we’re both fine :thumbsup: No need to open it up further.
I currently use every popular OS somewhat equally.

Many reasons. Been using Macbook Pro for a long time. I also use Linux and Windows, but mostly Apple devices at work. Everything works more seamlessly on Apple ecosystem, more well designed apps in general. And as a visual person everything is beautiful in the Apple camp.
On Android it’s constant tinkering and bloat. Grew tired of having to always look for the best custom ROM or a phone with best hardware optimized for certain feature set or ROMs. There are more options on Android but I dislike having the endless sea of bad options. In the mobile world things just need to work. Apple does that beautifully.
Oh yeah and there are still no good looking Mastodon apps on Android. For iOS there are plenty. Android apps generally suck ass visually.
My only regret is I didn’t buy an iPhone sooner. Had iPod Touch in 2007 and it was great. In 2023 I purchased the latest 1000 €+ Android phone and its screen latency was worse than the previous model so I returned it and got the latest iPhone instead.

Nykyään on asiat sinällään hyvin, olen tehnyt monta elämänmuutosta. Perustin oman yrityksen 2013, pääsin veloista eroon 2020, lopetin alkoholinkäytön vuonna 2020, laihdutin 20kg painoa pois vuoteen 2021 mennessä ja olen fyysisesti paremmassa kunnossa.
Mutta nämä vaikeudet ovat muovanneet minusta melkolailla erakon, enkä pääse ahdistusta karkuun.
