Bummed to learn about Maciej Cegłowski using the Pinboard Twitter account to spread unpleasant opinions about an athlete's gender. I wish he'd use the account to talk about things like the 8 hour API outage on August 8 instead.

Your LOL for today: USB devices don't have a unique identifier like a MAC address. Software often uses vendor + product ID as a stand-in. But those aren't unique, they're the same if you have two of the same product, like two identical hard drives. I ended up having to identify things but which port they were plugged in to. Hope I never move them around!

@npub1hx9…lyhl tell me more about the portability. I've done a couple of zpool import that worked, do you just expect it to? Is it fairly robust even if the disk interfaces change some, like you switch from eSATA to USB?

You know what's great? ZFS. Took me awhile to warm to it but having checksums, RAID features, fancy namespaces, checkpoints all in your storage system is just great.
The big drawback was it's not in the Linux kernel because of license issues. But Proxmox has it and so now I do, too.

Chrome Manifest v3 may drive me back to Firefox. Quite a list of benign extensions that are being disabled, basically anything that changes the UI for all pages. The "Find alternative" button here gives terrible suggestions and seems biased towards Google's business partner AdBlock Plus

Occasionally I see young people asking "What was it like being gay during the 1980s AIDS epidemic?" and I can't even with an answer, maybe they don't understand how traumatic it was and how hard it is to talk about.
Now I wonder if there's a good book. Not a memoir written in the moment but something written recently, with hindsight and historical perspective.

I want to know what the official high temperature yesterday was. The government site has instructions advising "You may want to print these instructions so you can read them while you perform each step in another browser tab" and then proceeds to explain how to use a shopping cart interface to select the integer I am looking for. Google Maps tried to kill me yesterday, routing me over a ford of a creek that is running quite swiftly right now. I used this to understand how GPT-3.5 invented new English words for me when I asked. Combining the tokens in plausible ways.

#[0] I think this is a very insightful analogy except for one problem: ChatGPT makes stuff up. You get at this at the end ("work to build an accurate mental model of how they work"). One nice thing about a numerical calculator is it's very easy to develop a mental model, it doesn't fabricate stuff.
