Sure I could easily host one on I2P or Tor... but then just about *no one* would federate with me.

I think that the reason several movements that were failing to gain any meaningful ground for over 60 years and yet in the span of two decades achieved greater adherence and impact than they had over the rest of the time most likely involves ease of communication.

Leaving your expensive stuff lying around is rather hard to justify.
Incidentally, a portable computer is a bit too cumbersome and heavy to easily grab & run without easily being caught up to and taught better.

That's the problem. The current behavior is fundamentally unsustainable.

Note that I keep insisting on the SMTP part because Fidonet & NNCP do not share SMTP's limitations.
Of those though, only NNCP has any particular provisions for encryption.

As for p2p and spam, that's really only true if you don't use a whitelist approach... which is incidentally the main approach to preventing overeager email spam filters as well (many of them consider added contacts on their non-standard service-specific contact system).

It (usually) only retries for three days (natural disasters and infrastructure problems can last longer) before considering delivery failed and there's no standardized protocol built on-top of delivery notification to ensure that a mail actually did make it to a peer.
And of course, with the over-eager spam filtering on many of those, even if it did get delivered, was it immediately discarded?

@npub17es…clcm Then depending on exactly how the messages are relayed (or whether it's direct-connection only, depends on the specific system), they could've expired on some intermediate host, still linger in some distributed hashmap... or still be in your peer's outbox waiting for a time window when you're both able to connect.
It's quite possible to make a system that uses *all* of those options to maximize reliability.

Remember, non-canonicalized paths are never to be used for anything on UNIXes.
They cannot be trusted.
Ideally, stop storing stuff in the filesystem and use a proper database. Odds are it'll perform better anyway (on top of the other consistency & reliability benefits).

Starts to be quite a few. It's weird to make a federation protocol in this day & age and not consider peering difficulties and inability to communicate directly (fuck, #Usenet does it better via #UUCP & #NNCP).
China isn't the only regime with a hard-on for censorship and utter disregard for the sanctity of networks after all. That should have been part of the design considerations.

That is indeed a lot less useful.

At the moment, last I checked, mixed transport network federation is between buggy & non-functional outside of depending on relays.

Federating with the rest of the world is an unsolved issue with relays as a main option at the moment (which only works for other users of the relay).
