Building and learning out in the open is extremely rewarding if you can put your ego aside. You can iterate quickly. You also get real time signals whether your ideas are any good. If people copy them, it means you’re onto something. This is particularly interesting in bitcoin where everyone basically holds the same equity. You can move the industry in a direction you think is worth exploring as a single bootstrapped indie hacker.

The first wallet we built at Lightning Labs displayed USD by default and flipped to sats when users tapped the amount label. Many wallets do that now: https://blog.lightning.engineering/announcement/2019/06/19/mobile-app.html
I’m kind of experimenting how long I can get away with displaying just sats rn. I don’t like displaying both fiat and sats at the same time. What do you prefer?

I’m not so worried about pushing updates from the developer side. I can automate with Fastlane, npm scripts and Github Actions doing the heavy lifting there. I’m more concerned about the install/update UX for users… there are quite a few more steps required to download a third party app store and then navigate to install/update the app vs just clicking “Download APK” on the StashPay website. Users come to the website and TestFlight mostly via my tweets.
I haven’t gotten much traction on Nostr so far unfortunately. Not sure if it’s because people don’t like Liquid over Ecash or if it’s because StashPay isn’t open source? I’ve built open source stuff for 12 years and have not found a viable business model there yet. So I’m self-funding and trying to figure out if I can find customers with a proprietary app+service for businesses. I’m open to open sourcing though once I understand my customer better and the app is out of beta. But I’m also open to feedback in this regard in case closed source is absolutely a no-go for folks.
When I tried zap.store I needed to update apps manually. I know auto-updates are frowned upon by many bitcoiners. And this is understandable for onchain/savings wallets and consensus updates for bitcoin core. But auto-updates seem appropriate to me for more complex apps holding smaller amounts like lightning spending wallets (especially for security updates). It seems like I can get that with auto-updates on Google Play and manual APK installs via my website.
Also, which nsec do developers generally use to sign APKs in zap.store? I assume they don’t paste their primary nsec into a CI?

I tested several third party app stores. But found direct download of the APK from https://stashpay.me had the best UX. The APK is signed with the developer key. So it‘s a TOFU (trust on first use) model if you trust the TLS cert on the first install. Subsequent updates of the APK would verify the developer signing key.
What‘s the advantage of using third party app stores? They don’t do auto-updates as far as I understand?

In case any apps using breez-liquid-sdk get pulled from app stores like it happened to Aqua. Your users can still get their funds out.

Spent the last four days off the grid in the Austrian Alps. Being able to unplug when I need a break is my favorite part of going indie. The main pressure I have to manage is from myself. It‘s been great to let go and hang out in the mountains with old friends for a few days.
This Monday feels totally different than last week. I’m excited to hopefully be able to invite the first StashPay users to TestFlight soon. But I feel rested and have accepted there are things I cannot control. App Store developer KYC is one of them.

StashPay is so dead simple and fees are cheap. It’s already replaced Phoenix as my main spending wallet. Only problem is all zaps are now at least 1k sats 😅

Unpopular opinion: Nostr users and influencers aren’t doing themselves a favor with the constant purity tests and true scotsmanship. It just alienates anyone trying to start a business.
Yes, the KYC on X suck, but it’s still the best way to build a marketing funnel and build traction. I’m trying my best to leverage Nostr and learn what its strengths/weeknesses are as a marketing tool, but first impression is it’s a mixed bag. Conversation with an experienced marketing person who was kind enough to mentor me this week confirmed that. I’m open to constructive feedback and suggestions as to what I’m missing though.
And yes, a newsletter sucks. But email is still one of the best ways to communicate with customers. If used wisely it’s a powerful tool and can be valuable for both sides.
And yes, Apple’s monopoly sucks. But iOS users still pay the most for software. Android users simply don’t pay for apps and buy subscriptions as much. I hope Zapstore offers new models to monetize Android (and AOSP) and I will keep shilling it because of that.
But if you aren’t offering solutions to these problem and just dunking on people doing their best to build something, you’re honestly just part of the problem. #note1z8l…60fz

FWIW I would personally trust the Liquid Network over a bank any day, especially for payments. But anyone can make that decision for themselves and their business.
Don’t forget as a US citizen you are speaking from a position of privilege. There is an underserved market that can’t get a bank account easily. Digital nomads and global small businesses is one of them. As a “foreign resident alien” (or whatever the IRS calls me) it’s hard to get a business bank account for my LLC. US banks see you as a compliance risk, not worth their time. So I have to use fintechs like Wise that don’t offer FDIC insurance. I’ll def take Liquid over holding any funds there.

I think it might be useful distinguish between multiple use cases and threat models for Bitcoin as a medium-of-exchange and acknowledge that these are being served by different architectures.
1. C-2-C payments
2. B-2-B payments
3. B-2-C payments
It seems to me 1. requires trust-minimization and high privacy. This use case is currently being served by LSP based self-custody Lightning wallets. And also by Cashu/Fedimint though these do leverage local trust and social incentives to share UTXOs.
For 2. and also in partially for 3. I think federations like Liquid leverage trust between businesses. So not on a local/private level but on a corporate level. Trust relationships in business can also be viewed as a type of social inventive structure to scale UTXOs but these are more abstract. So it makes sense that these federations have more members and I hope we will see more than one competing with each other.
I’m still wrapping my head around Liquid, so I need to give this more thought. But it seems useful to reason about it that way.

Your first assumption is correct. The funds are received and held by the user‘s liquid wallet on their phone. There is no lightning node on the device, so no need to manage inbound liquidity. Boltz handles all of that.

Re 2. a valuable service is also what I want to build. StashPay users will always be able to export their BIP39 seed and move to any other wallet that builds on the Liquid SDK. Keeps me honest.
