This is ironic. I've been offering an alternative democracy since 1997. This system has no political parties. People don't seem to be interested in ideas that do not fit into the current ways.

Communism changes with time and place.
At the time I was in CSFR, most enterprises were still state-owned but were being sold. There were classes, but with much less variation than Canada of 1990.
In a like manner, "democracy" is a transitory term. People have different definitions. Some have claimed that many western nations are not democratic.

The popular definition of "anarchism" is the breakdown of formal authority and rules.
The philosophical definition is we can resolve our differences without government--in a civil, nonviolent way. This means less need of government.
Sometimes we need to find which definition is being used.

I saw a good part of that episode. Strange that owner of Iris was so candid with his victimization by the CRA. His explanation of how his company earned revenue was unsatisfactory. Yet he proudly displayed his rich-man toys.
When the GST was implemented in 1990, I could see the possibility of bogus out-of-Canada companies getting GST rebates. The Fifth Estate did not explain this very well.

The media is one part of the problem. It is too dependent on advertisers who need controversy to make their ad campaigns work.

Abstaining from a vote should be regarded as a valid expression. There are several reasons for abstaining, and we should not degrade the voter for voting in this way.

Yep. This commercial makes little sense. Kind of hard to see the demographic it is targeting. Any bank that gives loans to yoga goat herders is not likely to be around in five years.
Maybe we need to watch more times. I find that sometimes works for me to understand convoluted commercials.
What's this bank's name? I didn't catch it.

The graphic is right on: "Voting does not work." I have been working on an alternative democracy since 1997. Yet 99.9999% of activists believe that voting can work. So they prefer to keep the old ways.

When I first heard about exporting wood chips half-way around the world, I shook my head.
Sawmills do have wood waste, which used to be be burned. They could have hooked up the kiln to a small steam turbine and put electricity back in the grid----instead of shipping it across the world to put electricity in the grid. .
How exporting wood chips can be profitable is mystery to me.

That's what I kind of thought. Marx was not a dictator.
I'm not a fan of any ideology. But we can borrow the better features.
The trick is the mechanism for making societal decisions.
The political right might indeed take over in the near future. Smaller chance of the political left doing the same. Most of us will live through it, even if we have to keep our heads low.

I need to read more Marx some day. I agree with his theory that capitalism will eventually fall in on itself. But I'm not sure where Marx is in regards to people who do not agree with a Marxist society. Repress them? To what degree? I don't know.
You still need to convince many more people of Marxism. Unfortunately, there is a lot of bad history (rightly or wrongly) that needs to be overcome to get that approval.

Then we run into the problem of who decides which narratives should be proffered to shape public opinion and which narratives should be banned.
We need a credible source to shape public opinion. Right now, we do not have that.

My utopia would allow these veiwpoints to still be expressed, but few people would listen to them.
When I first moved to Edmonton, there was a street preacher asking people to repent. 12 years later (when I left), he was still there. No evidence of him finding a convert to his version of Christianity.
There will be a day where the neoliberals will have only themselves as an audience.

I recall the western stories that to do almost anything in communist countries, one needed to spend hours working the bureaucracy to get permission. Things were never that bad.

I would agree with you that western democracies are often not that democratic. But to think that Hong Kong is in some kind of better state is naive.
The documentary said that big protests (>1m) are unlikely today. People are scared. People are leaving.
A police state has other ways of repressing people than breaking up protests. Think McCarthyism! The Chinese communists employ these techniques big time.

I just watched a mini-documentary on the state of democracy in Hong Kong. It is declining. Arrests and jail for organizers, suppressed media, and emigration for better pastures. This documentary is counter to the main message of the meme.
