She was my best friend.
Cookie, born 01 Oct 2009 in Damansara Uptown, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. Died 20 June 2024 in the Tenderloin, San Francisco, California. She loved adventures and naps equally. She ate delicious food daily. She slept on multiple soft pillows and blankets everywhere. She walked, climbed, ran, and she finally lay down to sleep in my arms.
My grief is an ocean, but I am glad she got to touch so many lives on the Internet, and everywhere she went.

Sad to say, she passed this morning. Cookie lived a grand, amazing life. She brought me so much joy. I am so thankful for the last two months of extra time that she gave us.
All of these photos were taken in June 2024. She was happy and mobile and lucid, and she passed at home surrounded by people who love her. 14 years and 8 months of joy and happiness. She taught me so much. I will always love you Cookie

A few min ago, we said goodbye to our baby Cookie, who lived till 14 years and 8 months. She was born in Malaysia, lived in Singapore, stopped over in Finland where she picked up a EU pet passport, and lived the last 6 years of her life in San Francisco where she was greatly beloved by all.
She had two beautiful and healthy months with us, from her last ER visit. After another one this week, we learned that she would decline further.
She will always be loved.

Went to an Indigenous event yesterday in San Francisco where they built a fire with volcanic rocks to make acorn mush. The guy doing it said it’s important to get these round, tumbled rocks and they usually come from east of the Sierras. They ran a very inclusive event yesterday where different Indigenous groups came and asked the Yelamu people for permission to come ashore (into the Bay). Everyone shared their songs and stories. I learned a lot.

The vet not only pulled Cookie back from the brink of mortality, she also seemed to have given Cookie some additional youthfulness. Cookie now has the energy of a puppy, wants to go on walks all the time, do everything, see and eat everything, everywhere. I’m a little tired keeping up with her. 15 years old in October!!

I've spent some time in the US and in Finland. Both countries are so different on extroversion / introversion.
Here in the US, I have to talk on the phone to people to get anything done; in Finland, when I wanted to do complicated things, I just had to type things to someone (I even got my dog's import health stuff sorted without ever speaking to a person).
As an ambi-vert, I like a mix of both.
Interesting fact: in China, introverts call themselves 'spiritually Finnish'

Cookie got a clean bill of health from the vet, who saved her when she had a close shave last month! She said Cookie is doing really well, though her issues are still ‘a ticking time bomb’. We are hoping we can manage them medically and keep her happy and comfy before that happens. I’m really glad to have extra time with her.

This feels like a big cultural shift. I think elderly queer millennials like me were the last group to see alcohol as ‘even slightly cool’. Our younger friends all have totally different relationships with booze now. I think that’s true in and out of the queer community

I took out my Yashica Mat 124G at a bar and an older man came over, asked to see it, and told me about how he used to work for Polaroid back in the day. He got to showing me his street photography from the 70s, and we arranged to meetup regularly to talk about photography.

Some things I learned about homemade pizza: it may be tempting to buy 00 flours like the ones used by the most famous pizzerias, but home ovens are 300-400F less hot than pizzeria’s. So higher protein, made for home 00 flours are fine (I used Bob’s, but you can also use Caputo)
Neapolitan style pizza sauce isn’t cooked, but East Coast American style pizza sauce is
Use a dark pan (cast iron or peel), it absorbs heat faster

First time making pizza, and pizza dough!
Used 00 flour, put it in the fridge for a few days, took it out and stretched it a bit.
First one is with sucuk, asparagus and egg. A Turkish take on one of my favorite pizza styles.
Second one is a thinner crust one with cheese and tomato and fresh basil from a friend’s garden.

Something I’ve learned, that I feel very strongly about:
All of us grew up believing myths about ourselves. ‘I am not creative,’ or ‘I am like this’. I am a person who doesn’t like cabbage, who loves coffee, I can’t draw to save my life, I can’t cook, I like dessert, or I don’t.
Allowing myself the space to explode some of the myths I’ve believed about myself has been the best thing ever. Who cares if I can’t draw? I’m drawing anyway.

When we first moved here, 45 made it impossible for foreign spouses to work. So my wife went back to school and today, she’s graduating with her Bachelors in Psychology. Next stop: grad school! (Thankful for California’s excellent public universities system, and resident tuition!)

When I return 'home', home feels like these two photos.
Home is the view from the 30th storey of my parents' home. Home is the sweaty, messy stickiness under your armpits in the food centres nestled in high rise buildings with the roar of woks as loud as jet engines. Home is sweating in 95F / 35C and still electing to drink boiling temperature soup, and hot beverages, in a hot not airconditioned food court inside a high rise building.

It's the colors green and red and pink that I feel I miss the most. I was never aware of it, but that was the color palette of my life.
the same way i never cared for blue skies until i got to san francisco. sure, blue sky days are nice, but i had blue skies 365 days of my life.

Everything smells like something. It wasn't until I left the equator that I realized, most places don't smell at all like home.
Flowers, for the temple. Onions and garlic, for the food. Durian, for dessert.

Lately, I've been thinking about what it means to have come from the equator. Imagine growing up with no seasons, except 'rain' and 'monsoon' and 'hot' and 'hotter'. Everything around you is green, all year round, never brown. Lush is not just the word they use in magazines about tropical travel, but it's the only world you know.

Ever since her vet scare a month ago, we’ve been walking much more slowly. 15 years with her and every moment has been a blessing. I’m thankful to have a little bit more with her. As long as she’s happy!

It’s been 3 weeks since Cookie’s vet scare. She has good and bad days, still mostly good. She loves the farmers market on Sundays, and she loves standing in the middle of it all so that dozens of people will pet her and say they love her.
I think it makes her happy. I still get worried that she is having more mobility issues with extreme old age, but for as long as she’s still got good days, I’m happy

I think what’s also missing from the conversation is that lots of non-Anglo food, even with meat, has a much smaller amount of meat. I think all in, the total amount of meat across a shared 4 course meal might amount to less than the one single meat serving you might have in a traditional Anglo style meal. And across the random veggies in soups, stir fry, steamed stuff, I feel like it adds up. I know some people really want The Big Veg, but that’s a new way of thinking about food for me.

I eat 30+ types of vegetables a week now which is new, but it’s a ‘gut health challenge’ rather than anything inherently moral or good about eating your vegetables. I find the complex of vegetables are inherently superior and good and clean and pure to have some eco or religious fascist tones in some communities I’ve been around.
And I’ll always struggle with the ‘health food’ people.

I’ve learned from talking to other people (like my wife) that they ‘feel good’ after eating vegetables.
I don’t think about food / balance that way. Balance for me in diet comes from having not too much fried stuff at once, almost no ultra processed foods. Of course we eat vegetables but it just not as central.
In a very expensive Cantonese restaurant, the veggie dish is used to show off the.. dried scallop superior gravy the chef spent hours making.

Sometimes I volunteer at food bank things and when we serve a meal, I always get sent to ask the Chinese aunties and uncles if they would like a plate of ‘lettuce with salad dressing out of a bottle’ 9 out of 10 of them say no. Often with disgusted looks.
It’s 9 out of 10 yes for other people. It’s just a data point that makes sense to me (because culturally lots of raw veggies are very difficult / impossible to southern Chinese people like me.)

I haven’t encountered a single vegetable-centered dish at any of the Thai, Japanese, Malaysian restaurants I’ve visited in LA. It is possible to eat differently from the rest of the world (re a conversation a few days ago about always having to order veggies)
(To be clear, I agree everyone should eat veggies if they want! But also that, there are many cuisines which simply aren’t vegetable-centered)
(I had a very large raw papaya salad, lots of fiber but also enough chilli to kill a bear)

I truly feel that the moment I liberated myself from the ideas of ‘doing / learning things for productivity / success’, my relationship with everything changed. Like wdym I can learn typography without becoming a designer, learn to play an instrument without ever performing, and just.. be?
There’s a lot of info about ‘perfecting a craft’ but I’d bet it would help most people to just ‘dabble in a craft’

Late last year, I ran a small project with a nonprofit in San Francisco. We gave out instant film cameras (color and black and white) to 5 people who were either unhoused or who lived nearby in one of the 'SROs'. We did a tiny, tiny exhibition.
I'm still working to figure out how to make this a more regular thing, and how to show their work, because they have such amazing stories to tell.
