So there's a certain #Python package A that's become pretty much abandoned, and then forked as B. It's using a separate import name now — but the API (modulo the different import name) is the same, and there are no changes that would be significant to #Gentoo users. There's a lot of packages that depend on A right now, and only one on B. On top of that, the maintainer of B seems to pretty much uninterested, beyond keeping the project working for their own needs. What should we do?
Should we just package both for the time being, and effectively have users install two copies of pretty much the same thing? If so, should we encourage other projects to switch to B? Should we start patching Gentoo packages to use B, and effectively be able to remove A? And if we do — what if A is eventually revived (either by its current maintainers, or transferred to a new maintainer)?
Or should try to package B to replace A instead? Then we'd also have to patch revdeps of B to use depend on A again, even though they're really going to be getting patched B.
Or should we just patch that one revdep of B to use plain A instead, and start worrying again when more packages start using B, or it becomes truly incompatible with A?

I've just learned that nowadays a "small taxpayer" in Poland is one with income up to 2 million euro, and I'm not sure how I should feel about it.
(Well, okay, if you're trading, I suppose it's not that hard to reach that amount of turnover. But from a perspective of someone who just offers services and has no costs, it's kinda funny.)

People have tried to classify the world into two groups since time immemorial.
And so we've had the "civilization", and "barbarians". We've had "empires", and "frontiers". "West" and "East". Finally, "developed countries", and those still "developing" — later replaced by "Global North" and "Global South".
I think the most reasonable split today is into countries where corporations still have limited power, and those where corporations can do anything they want. Of course, it's all primarily the matter of investment in corruption and propaganda.

#UnpopularOpinion, though I guess some folks will consider it unpopular starting the second paragraph:
There should be no direct payments for municipal waste collection. The waste should be collected from everyone, for free, in any amount.
However, we should tax goods with a significant "utilization tax". It should also cover impoted goods. Higher for stuff that's hard to dispose, and of short lifetime. It should cover the ecological cost of disposal, and simultaneously put some brakes on the consumerism and the omnipresent single-use items (I'm thinking of the e-cigarette crap right now, but the problem is much wider).
But well, if people actually took responsibility for the waste they create and how they devastate their own problem, that'd be socialism.

A lot of projects these days are like "for a few years now, we have been supporting the fringe tool B as an alternative to the well-established and commonly used tool A, and since not many people ever complained about B, it must be perfect, and we're now removing support for A!"
It's like people can't realize that if someone's got A working and used it all this time, they're not going to proactively look for alternatives and test them. I mean, most of us never even noticed that something like B exists, because A always worked just fine (and still works)! And even if we knew it exists, why would we spend our time on it, when A just works? And if we didn't even start testing it, why would you expect us to report bugs in it?
It really feels like your average brainfried consumerism. "Oh, look, a shiny new tool, we must start using it immediately!"
Yes, I'm talking about #SigStore again. Expect a major rant, when I finally manage time to do proper research.

I've told myself that I'm going to point out generic issues rather than point fingers at specific projects, but I guess that makes more sense for mistakes rather than deliberate harmful behavior, so…
The drama continues. The #multipart and python-multipart #PyPI packages both claim the #Python import name of "multipart". Both have arguments for their claims, both refuse to step down, and unsurprisingly, both reach the same compromise: vendoring. Except that one says they're eventually going to vendor it in their popular package (at some future time), while the other tells everyone to vendor the other package in the meantime.
The damage is quite deep here. First, people start using one of the packages. Then they learn that they've just introduced a potential dependency conflict. And the only thing that they can do now is start vendoring an arbitrary version of the package. And one day, someone will have to clean this mess up.
And of course, people are now looking for technical solutions to this disturbing social problem. In fact, I'll probably end up going for the rename-and-patch approach in #Gentoo to start unvendoring immediately. What a mess.
The bottom line is: if you're using #starlette, you may want to reconsider.

Continuing contrasting ideas between me and liberals.
I wouldn't call a "slob" or a "freeloader" a person who stops working in order to take care of their family or focus on their passion. Or one who helps others, or needs help. Or who is sick, or suffers from burnout. Or even one who does not work, because they don't want to waste their life on stuff that's useless and pointless in the best case, and openly harmful in the worst case. Labor is not a goal unto itself, career is not some kind of fundamental value that defines a human.
The true "slobs and freeloaders" are capitalists. Bankers, property developers, rentiers, middlepeople, speculators, marketing people… Shortly: people who don't do anything truly creative, or useful. People who excel at navigating the capitalistic world and working their way up, both materially and formally. People for whom labor is a goal unto itself, and at the cost of others. People pushing this world into doom.

The most important thing to some liberals is the unrestrained need to have more. Don't get me wrong, I'm not talking of having a lot of stuff. I'm talking of constantly having something new. Once you've bought something, once you've gloated over it to your friends, that stuff has no value anymore. Best trash it, so that you could buy something else, and gloat again. And of course, the value of a person is entirely defined by how much it is able to gloat.
And then, they are going to complain that they're so unlucky, that so much of they hard-earned money is taken by public health insurance (we're talking of Polish libs). That these "slobs and freeloaders" should pay for their own treatment, instead of being a parasite. Of course, the libs are happy to ignore the fact that they themselves benefit quite a lot from the same health insurance, using a lot of free doctor visits and refundable medicine. But of course, "slobs and freeloaders" are always to blame, never greedy big pharma.
Sometimes I think that the amount of public funding for your own medical treatment shouldn't be hidden so deeply in the "ePacjent" web service, but instead regularly mailed to people, so they'd have a better idea of how much they benefit from public healthcare. Of course, even that still wouldn't make them realize that if not for public healthcare, the prices of medicine would skyrocket in the name of free market and untamed capitalism.

Rewriting #Python packages in #RustLang is going great, right?
That's why for almost a year now #CEPH users have a problem, because Rust parts of Cryptography are clashing with Rust parts of BCrypt. But it's great!
And the best thing is Cryptography authors' attitude — #PyO3 has to deal with it, let's close the bug and lock comments. We really should have more critical packages like that.

So it seems that #Microsoft is still unable to deal with the wave of dangerous #GitHub #spam. The one where random accounts immediately post a comment to newly reported bugs, containing a malware link. The comment is always following the *same scheme*, with the *same password*. Do they really need to train a LLM to deal with that?
[EDIT: Oh, and the most absurd part? It is that *I* need to pass CAPTCHA to report them. Because obviously GH support can't be bothered, bots should only be permitted to bother users.]
