Doing some UI/UX cleanup.. and comparing to some similar systems UI's. While pretty, they are slow, obtuse and were designed by committees that never ever ever took a tech support call for a "how do I.." or "where would I". My stuff won't win design awards.... but it doesn't generate support issues either.

Bash is a SHELL and isn't necessarily a programming language but can be pretty good. PERL was essentially created for system admin / automation and reporting. It is awesome at parsing log files and other sources, hence the nickname: Perfectly Eclectic Rubbish Lister
And don't laugh, but I do a lot of scripting (non web) work in PHP as well. #DevOps #PERL #PHP

All of those 1990's beating my head compiling "it worked on the devs machine at least once" C code is useful. I'm not much of a C person, but I can edit some C files, make files.. fake out "configure" with symlinks faking specific library versions (or edit the spec) and get odd things to compile. and seems to be running correctly. Have a young fledgling geek coworker at major project going back to school to learn CompSci and Infosec. He's sharp. But as I try to chat with him about things, I realize how much I just "know" about things tech and the internet. Core foundational things I'm finding hard to explain without other things he also does not yet know.

It's after 5pm on a Sunday and my head hurt. Sipping an expresso with some whisky to see which urge wins. It's 25f outside so back to writing code is looking like the winner. What I need is some meatspace friends good for larks and adventures. Most of my previous ones have ascended or are far far away and I sure miss them. Oh well.. at least I get paid for this. Am starting to despise modern API devs. In many cases I need to pull a few thousand records. Their API allows <= 250/256 (depends on API) records at a time, with a page #. With rate limiting, and rapidly changing data I sometimes get a dupe at the end of one page and the start of another. Or miss somthing that existed when I started the query. Easy enough for me to code around, but I miss the database concept of a static set of data for a query. #API #SQL

Close those fallow tabs! At an office and plugged in a SharkTap. The bosses computer (of course) had umpteen tabs open, running all kinds of crap, miners? torrents? I got no idea what most of that crap was. Unplugged the ethernet switch on the desk and everything else at the facility (phones and such) started working properly again.

I'd pay $10+ per month for a setting in amazon.com for my mother-in-law to be able to shop, go through the motions of buying things with a delivery date 7 days into the future. after that, it'd just show it as returned and never charge her. 'Cuz she's therapy shopping: when stuff shows up she asks my wife (her daughter) why it showed up, doesn't remember it, doesn't like it and ask to please return it. #amazon

@npub1t7d…pqpp I've built some bespoke beasts for special applications. Gotten paid well for them ($400k USD+). The client will pay for "life support", but they don't want to pay for ecosystem evolution. In more than one case, what we built in < 6 months was supposed to fill a temporary need until ____ (Oracle, SAP, IBM...) "Did It Right". In one case I know of, still running, that was 9 years ago and runs critical infrastructure for a country. Even RedHat stopped support. Sigh.

It's a fair energy storage fuel, but it's not very efficient to make. Solve that issue and I could change my mind. Modern high pressure tanks and fittings are pretty good. Is an H2 explosion/fire better or worse than a Lithium one? Different at least.

I've been using Linode for many many years for hosting > 100 custom Debian/Asterisk VPS's... I'm starting to look for a secondary provider, preferably with good API's for spinning up images and managing basics (power on/off, creation at datacenters from specific images).
