Yea, cardinal was one of the thoughts going through my mind. The tail and the head look like a cardinal. But the shape of the beak is not cardinal-ish. Perhaps, you are right, and the angle of photo is deceptive. The clarity of the photo isn't the best either.

It is the dawn of a new day and here I sit with my feet upon my desk and my keyboard in my lap. I do have coffee. It occurred to me that the only three drinks left in my diet are water, tea, and coffee. Tea and coffee without sugar or sweetener; that is okay, I've been drinking black coffee for decades and unsweetened iced tea is not unfamiliar either. Jack is a dull boy. Oh, I forgot almond and rice milk.
Here's Charlie. I left the bedroom door open last night, and this morning Charlie was at my bedside and six o'clock sharp mumbling and kind of nudging the bed in a failed attempt to wake me without waking my wife. It was my wife who got me moving. It was time to go outside.

Hanging with the Big Birds
This is a ruby-throated hummingbird, juvenile male, I think. The bird was hanging around the finches and cardinals this morning. Chasing them actually. The larger birds would duck deeper inside the bushes.

I hear Ben barking; he wants back in the house. He did the same thing to go outside. He can be a bossy little dog. Charlie usually just sits quietly and lets Ben do all the work. Hmmm ... my wife must have let them back inside because Ben just wandered in and took up his spot behind my chair, but now he just wandered out again ... quietly which is good.

Ben was sick last night. It's my fault because I gave Ben and Charlie most of the chicken out of the salad I had for supper. I was up and down last night letting them outside and cleaning up little messes. I ended up just sleeping in my recliner so Ben could wake me easier. They will let me know when they need to go out, I just need to be accessible. Anyway, I think the worst of that is over. I am beat down this morning; I went out to tend to the birds and got one of those bird seed injuries that you hear about all the time. I hit my right forearm on the hardware inside the shed which peeled off a little skin. I should be careful when I'm tired.

Field Sparrow?
I think this is a field sparrow (Spizella pusilla), but I'm not sure. There are a lot of those around, but I haven't knowingly seen one until now, me thinks. Unless I find out different that is what it is. Feel free to chime in iffen you'uz knows what it be. :-)

My wife tells me that's not the way the song goes. I'm pretty sure the verses go good together. It's kind of a turn that frown upside down kind of mix, isn't it?
Sometimes our brain just doesn't let us be happy. I think that is what depression is, or anxiety, you get a thought and can't let it go, it's like a broken record, it keeps coming back to the same place. The trick is getting past the scratch in the record. Talking to somebody often helps.

Desktop Cleanup
Sometimes when I'm doing cleanup, I delete photos that are not so good, but I like them for some reason. Other times like this one, I just see what I can do with the photo and sometimes I get carried away.

Clean-up
I've had this photo on my desktop for some time now not able to decide what to do with it. It is some type of fungus associated with tree decay. It looks like a hand reaching out from beneath the earth.

I got up late this morning and initially forgot to say good morning. Well, I'm making up for that now. In person, saying good morning in the morning, often comes out in a mumble as I stumble through the house, that's if anybody is up, besides me and the dogs. That is usually not the case, even if we have guests staying.
Why do we say good morning? It is because we are acknowledging the person that we are saying it to. Plus, it is something that we can say even if we don't like the other persons shoes. It is respectful to acknowledge the people around you. Though It's not normal to say good morning to every person in Walmart on a crowded day.

Sunlit Flutter
The way the sun illuminates the wings of this butterfly is quite stunning. These are fairly common around here. This is a Gulf Fritillary Butterfly (Dione vanillae).

Tree walker
Watching a woodpecker walk up the side of a tree as easy as waling on a level branch always strikes me as unnatural. They all do it though, just like this downy woodpecker (Dryobates pubescens). It has something to do with their zygodactyl feet, they have two front toes and two rear.

A few weeks ago, I received a reply on Mastodon form a guy who was upset because I updated a post that I made months ago. It seemed to bother him greatly that I corrected a spelling error on an old post. When I notice errors, I do take the time to correct them, and I use old content. I explained what I was doing to the guy, and it seemed to bother him even more because he felt the need to try and insult me online, so I blocked him. But I wonder, I won, won, wonder, why it bothered him so much 🎶.
Hmmm ... Charlie is bugging me and Ben is barking, it must be close to mealtime.

For this photo, I used a Sigma 150-600 mm Contemporary lens. It is relatively affordable - less than $1000. I have it paired with a Canon 5DS-R which is an older model w/o many features; but it does have a 50.6 megapixel full frame sensor.
I also frequently shot with a Canon 6D paired with a Canon 100-400 mm lens Ef and a 1.4x extender. They work smoother together and are lighter, but don’t have the reach of the Sigma.

Inca Dove
Wow, I'm used to seeing mourning doves around here, even the occasional collard or whit4e wing doves. This is the first time I noticed an Inca Dove (Columbina inca). I took this in March 2024 and didn't pick up on the bird until today. I probably thought a mourning dove until today when I took a closer look. We live just below the northern edge of this species range. Very cool.
"The tiny Inca Dove is covered in tan scaly-looking feathers and blends right in with its suburban desert habitats. That is, until it bursts into flight, making a dry rattling whir with its wings while flashing chestnut underwings and white in its tail. I know, dog lives are too brief. My dog Ben is 15, but he is doing good, his eyesight is diminished, especially in the dark and he is crankier than he used to be. if he wants something, he will just start barking incessantly until he gets what he wants.

Ruffled Repose
I took this photograph from across an inlet, I'll guess the bird was 150-200 meters away. It's a pretty good image from that distance. This is a great blue heron (Ardea herodias).
"Great Blue Herons have specialized feathers on their chest that continually grow and fray. The herons comb this “powder down” with a fringed claw on their middle toes, using the down like a washcloth to remove fish slime and other oils from their feathers as they preen. Uncharacteristically, I stayed up late last night, until almost midnight. I was watching a new show that I found interesting. The problem is Charlie, Ben too, but mostly Charlie. No matter what, he comes to wake me before six every morning. He's like an alarm clock that I can't turn off. He has kind of a "doze button" that works ... sometimes. I can tell him to go get in bed, and he may lay down for a few minutes before getting back to the job getting me out of bed. The moral to the story is that if I say up late, I'm going to pay in the morning. I can nap after morning mealtime though. Sometimes I wonder who is actually in charge around here.

Fiery Skyline
I love sunsets. You know that you can sit in one spot and watch the skyline change. It's like having a multitude of sunsets on the same night.
This one, would look good on stretched canvas, or maybe framed with a black frame. I can see it in my mind on a large wall, like a window into imagination.

Cardinal Contrast
Here is a northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) from early spring this year (2024).
Bright red on a gray day stands out. It is almost monochromatic except for the bird.

Most people don't really sail alone until they mature, me thinks. Maturity comes at different times; personally, I was a late bloomer in both appearance and personality, and it is a little embracing to think back on at times. In youth people are imitators, that is what fashion is mostly about, after all, people playing dress up. In the 60s somebody, Sony and Cher I think, picked up the bell bottom trend and it spread like wildfire, young people everywhere were imitating the "cool look," me included. Bellbottom denim was the rage, and the beat goes on. Does that mean that we try to be or at least look like what we see?

Driftwood Turtle Trio
Here are some pond sliders turtles (Trachemys scripta), that I photographed at Alligator Lake in Louisiana. They start climbing up onto driftwood logs and such, when it starts to warm up in the morning. It is not uncommon to see six or seven sharing the same log, it is evidently a task to climb up, but getting of is as easy as falling off a log.
I don't post all of the photos that I post here to my Pixels gallery, but I post the photos I like best. Some don't make the cut. I usually wait a couple of days and see how I feel about it then. I can tell right now that I like this photo.

Destination Unknown
I saw these three western cattle egrets (Bubulcus ibis) passing by in Texas last week.
"
The short, thick-necked Western Cattle Egret spends most of its time in fields rather than streams. It forages at the feet of grazing cattle, head bobbing with each step, or rides on their backs to pick at ticks. This stocky white heron has yellow plumes on its head and neck during breeding season. I have powers. Yesterday, there was no precipitation in the forecast with some patchy clouds, but I made it rain. You might ask, what is the secret to my power? Well, it is as simple as this: I started watering my lawn early. I don't have a sprinkler system, so I have to do the long hose drag. Thus, I watered from six in the morning until 10:30 A.M., then I pulled in the hoses, put away the sprinkler, and went into the house. About 15 minutes later, it started pouring down rain. Coincidence you might say, but trust me, that was not the first time that I've cause rain in that way. To think of it any other way would mean that I just had bad luck. Be positive. 😂

Majestic Wingspan
Take a look and the wing span and plumage of this great blue heron (Ardea herodias). I snaped the photo just as the bird touched down and before it dropped its wings to its sides.

Cute Fluffy Yellow Bird (Cutest Maxximus)
This is an American Goldfinch (Spinus tristis), goldfinches were around in flocks during the winter, so I have a lot of photos of these birds.

It is Independence Day in the USA. It is a day of barbeques and fireworks. I have a nice grill, but I haven't really used it in a long time. Interesting story, I went through considerable trouble to get the grill a few years ago, I had big plans for the grill. Soon after I purchased the grill, my doctor decided that I shouldn't eat meat ... what! Well, I went full on vegan for a while, it did completely take though, my plumbing didn't work right. Humans are Omnivores after all. So, I settled into a routine of eating mostly vegetables and minimal amounts of animal protein, avoiding red meat. I'm not certain why red meat is bad, but she's the doc.

This Bird.
I'm almost positive that this bird is an eastern bluebird (Sialia sialis), its shape is familiar, though its wing bars give me pause. It is probably a juvenile. Unfortunately, the photograph isn't the greatest. I took this photograph at a small lake near Houston, Texas.
"Eastern Bluebirds typically have more than one successful brood per year. Young produced in early nests usually leave their parents in summer, but young from later nests frequently stay with their parents over the winter." - allaboutbirds.org

There were fireworks around here last night, undoubtably neighbors who purchased fireworks for the 4 of July, tomorrow, but couldn't wait to try them out. When I was a child in Japan, there were two types of fireworks that I enjoyed fiddling with one type were cracker balls, they were little multicolored balls that we could through against a hard surface, and they popped. The other was firecrackers, the Japanese firecrackers had built in match heads so we could strike them and throw. I grew out of fireworks decades ago, but I don't recall seeing the same types of fireworks here is the USA. It doesn't mean that they don't exist though, just not for me.
