The Marvel creators had to get everything approved by Lucasfilm from 1977-1986 because it most definitely WAS canon. In the middle of that series as the offical ESB adaptation. How isn't that canon?!
John Byrne did two issues of Indians Jones which were great because he can draw WW2 era stuff really well. And he quit because Lucasfilm slowed him down too much with nitpick corrections/approvals.

THEN....it got interesting....the story basically took each of Vader's hired bounty hunters, split them up, and had the remaining heroes track Han Solo down across the galaxy.
