The way I see it, relays (being rather simple) have a lot of options when it comes to how they want to run their feeds.
You can have a payed relay for an exclusive club (like paid discord groups), or set one up for access to a large cohort of writers (newspaper subscription), or as a way to see exclusive content from influencers (onlyfans), or simply a relay that offers a spam-free experience.
And that relay money can do some neat things (you could setup a creative collective group where all relay money gets split among top posters).
Payed relays can be anything really.

I can understand & recognize that fear, for sure.
I think one key difference here is that the internet missed one crucial component: Identities.
Arguably, the best thing NOSTR can bring to the table is a robust set of identification protocols that are all open & accessible. This way, users won't get trapped into any future company's walled garden (we saw this recently on Twitter, people can't just migrate their account & connections easily over to a new service, so a lot of them just said screw it & stayed where they hated).
If a front-end wanted to become closed & start walling off their data... Well then they wouldn't really be building off of NOSTR so fuck em. The incentives are aplenty for people who wanna build on this foundation, and we're still early days. I'm sure new NIPs will be created with the goal of increasing incentives. Hell, I got a few ideas myself 😏

If NOSTR catches on, there should be a directory app where you login once and then can swipe through all the various interfaces/frontends so you can rapidly find your favorite when onboarding.
Thats kinda a crazy idea to think about...
