I can understand & recognize that fear, for sure.
I think one key difference here is that the internet missed one crucial component: Identities.
Arguably, the best thing NOSTR can bring to the table is a robust set of identification protocols that are all open & accessible. This way, users won't get trapped into any future company's walled garden (we saw this recently on Twitter, people can't just migrate their account & connections easily over to a new service, so a lot of them just said screw it & stayed where they hated).
If a front-end wanted to become closed & start walling off their data... Well then they wouldn't really be building off of NOSTR so fuck em. The incentives are aplenty for people who wanna build on this foundation, and we're still early days. I'm sure new NIPs will be created with the goal of increasing incentives. Hell, I got a few ideas myself 😏
