So I think that, for a human who *deliberately* manages an environment variable, probably they're better off modifying "~/.profile". Which *isn't* subject to automated modification by programs.
The "~/.config/environment.d/" files are still good, for automated management by programs without needing to touch the user's "~/.profile" and probably screw it up.

The joy of "~/.config/foo.d/" (and the convention of "when 'foo' starts up, read all files in that directory and combine them to one configuration")
is that, to add/modify/remove individual pieces, a simple file operation does the job, *without* needing to parse anything else in the same directory.
Which is good for a program that wants to add/modify/remove snippets. Not great for a human who wants to comprehend the whole lot.

Several things:
* He's just not very bright, he has bad ideas far more often than worthwhile ones.
* He has a weird obsession with "X" as a name for everything.
* This led him to purchase the 'x.com' domain in 1999. He tried and failed to make something popular on that domain.
* Ever since, he's wanted something to make him look cool and he's convinced 'x.com' is part of that.

* Software freedom for everyone without any discrimination.
* Any anti-user crap (surveillance, subverting user control, etc.) can be removed by anyone and they can share the improvement with everyone.
* Designed by and for the people who use it.
* Hardware has a vastly increased useful lifetime when running free software.
* Data remains compatible so long as someone wants that enough.

I feel this, for sure. But when I teach Python, there's a lot of scope for teaching broader programmer culture / good coding practice, that is enabled a lot by the ease of using modern paradigms in this language.
Enough so that I typically don't feel I'm just teaching features and tips, but rather teaching better ways to develop code.
