So I really like Pepperidge Farm stuffing in a bag, but it appears no longer available to buy. I know there are lots of 'copycat' recipes of well-known brands, and was hoping to find one for this stuffing - but all the links for 'copycat' recipes I'm finding online either don't actually have a recipe, weirdly, or even more weirdly have Pepperidge Farm stuffing as one of the ingredients. He's gentle, careful, caring, creative, maybe a little lazy and prone to fantasising. So, many of the self-improvement books I read suggest identifying and learning from mentors, role models, exemplars, people I can look up to and admire. I've always struggled with this - I've really forged my own path in the world (and can honestly say I'm one of the few people, possibly only person, I know for whom this is true), and there just aren't many people who do the kind of thing I do as well as I do (or at least as well as I think I do). I'm obviously always learning, but I can't think of any specific people that I want to learn from or who I would want to model myself after.
But I'm trying to make a list of people I admire, whose habits and choices I can take lessons from. Here's my draft list so far:
Derrick Jensen – for his honesty and bravery
Lierre Keith – for her commitment to making the world a better place
Kellie-Jay – for her bravery, creativity, energy, commitment, compassion
Serena Williams – for her commitment to excellence
Daniel Kahneman – for his curiosity and ability to create and test hypotheses
Charles Darwin – same
Jane Clare Jones – for her ability to bring powerful analytical skills to bear on issues that matter
If anyone has any suggestions for adding to it please share. One thing the book I'm currently reading says is '[o]ne of the biggest mistakes that I see people make is they don’t want to learn from someone who has a character blemish or a worldview that doesn’t align with theirs.' So the person doesn't have to be perfect in every respect, just an example of a specific skill or character trait that I want to do better/be better at.

Which is why I'd suggest that this is one of the few things we can learn from men (within reason, and the best kind of men).

I work in a 'male-dominated' environment, and it took me a while to learn that when a man starts to argue that I (or another man) has made a mistake, or made a bad choice, or done something harmful to the project at hand they're not 'attacking me' (or the other man) but actually offering useful input. And just because they thought you made a mistake or did something dumb doesn't mean they think you yourself are bad, stupid or wrong. Agree, accept the criticism, or argue back, but don't take their criticism to mean that they hate you (at least not any more than men typically hate women).

So, I've been thinking, after the most recent rift among feminists - it always does seem to break down by who's friends with whom. X takes a position, and Y takes the same position (attacking anyone who takes another position) because X is Y's friend; it's usually as simple as that. But I'm thinking about how real friends will be brave enough to tell you when you've said or done something foolish or unhelpful. If Y is really X's friend, maybe instead of offering unconditional support and vilifying anyone who doesn't she might think about having a conversation with X about what taking their position means and how it's damaging the movement.

It may be that the unintended (by the women in question) outcome is female separatism, who knows - I'd like to think most women will eventually come to understand that no relationship with a man is better than a bad one (if not necessarily better than a good one, if they can find that).
Re female trades - I'm (maybe!) getting ready to buy a house and I know I'll need at least a plumber; unfortunately stopcocks.uk wasn't able to find a female plumber in my city, but I'm sure I'll be able to find some women to work on my house.

But I'm only talking about basic economics - I would agree that there are many other 'left/right' issues - immigration, education, religious tolerance come to mind - where feminists might go in lots of different directions for lots of different reasons.

@npub1n4k…x2dq Shrinking government leaves more powerful organisations (ie corporations) to fill the power vacuum; that's not ideal for women or anyone else. 'Leftist' economic policies are good for women because they give women opportunities outside of depending on individual men for resources, and because policies that facilitate equality will benefit women, who have historically been unequal. (Interestingly, the conversations/interactions I've had with libertarians have made it startlingly clear to me that when they talk about 'freedom' they mean 'the freedom for men to do what they like with their property, which includes women and children'.

Friend and I were talking about AI yesterday - he's worried that it will affect his job, and is going to make some efforts to learn more about it. It occurred to me that while it's great that these apps can do a lot of 'mental grunt work', specifically 'scraping' documents for information, they're also learning from these tasks the kinds of things novices in these kinds of professions would also be learning. If there's no basic work left for novices/apprentices/graduates to do, how are they going to develop their own skills and domain knowledge to be able to do the senior-level work that will still need to be done by people?
This relates, tangentially, to the 'miracle on the Hudson' - an experienced pilot landed a damaged passenger plane on the Hudson River with (IIRC) no loss of life. But where did this experienced pilot get his experience? Not from sitting in the cockpit while the autopilot flew the plane. It's a bit of a paradox that people only get the experience to handle emergencies (or complex challenging problems) by putting in the hours in non-emergency situations, and that's exactly what AI will be keeping from doing.
