Imagine if, when a computing device (iPad, Android phone, console etc) is no longer supported by a manufacturer they had to open up the ability to install 3rd party operating systems on it.
Specs etc for drivers, whatever enables this effort to be done easily by others.
Support it, secure it, or open it up.
Keep things out of landfill.
If tech companies really cared about the environment, then surely this would help?

One of the reasons I appreciate and respect trans people, is that understanding yourself at that level, and choosing to assert your identity in that way, is punk (as in rock) as fuck.
I suspect this might be what triggers some bigots so easily too. They could never do so for themselves in their own lives.

How do they plan to a support their kids or other folk they care about, if they get long COVID?

What I keep coming back to with Covid is, what is the medium to long term plan?
It seems the majority have decided it can be memory holed as a bad experience and just ignored now.
Meanwhile we have health services getting messed up on the regular by surges, school closures and staff shortages in various industries. Meanwhile we have a good % of folk disabled, every week by infection.
This doesn’t seem like it can keep working indefinitely. So what’s the plan?

There’s a banality of denial in all this. Folks who find it too hard, too difficult to understand that mitigations are still worthwhile and necessary but don’t necessarily wish anyone else harm.

There’s a parallel in denialism of COVID risk to AIDS in the 80s and early 90s. It was denied and ignored, by various government as it was perceived to be only killed and affecting gay people, and implicitly to that view, that was a good thing.
With COVID, there is a view that it’s only an issue for vulnerable folks, and, implicit to that view is that this is a good thing.
The ableism that folks have tied up in the denial around this is an ugly thing.

In NZ we are encouraged to prepare against the risk of earthquakes. They’re happening all the time, and there is always that risk of “the big one”.
So we do. We are privileged enough to be able to, and so this is a thing we have done as a family.

I miss coffees with individuals and chatting with them one on one. (This is something I can still do if the other person is as careful. Those folk are rare). Don’t miss group activities.

@npub1pfe…e2dm I went through exactly this decision making process when we updated our old “dumb” HD TV to a 4K one.
In the end, we bought the TV we wanted based on spec and price point, *never* connected it to the wifi, and just have it setup with an AppleTV.
They still have to function without connection for the variety of situations they may be used in, and they autodetect the connected input.
It’s a bit disconcerting seeing “AndroidTV” show up as it boots though before selecting the HDMI 😅
