The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) was established in 1994 by Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee, to develop interoperable standards to lead the Web to its full potential.

We are an international multi-stakeholder community where member organizations, a full-time staff, and the public work together to build a Web based on the principles of accessibility, internationalization, privacy and security.

The CSS Working Group has published CSS Containment Module Level 1 as an updated W3C Recommendation, incorporating the changes since the 2022 Recommendation. This CSS module describes the contain property, which indicates that the element’s subtree is independent of the rest of the page. This enables heavy optimizations by user agents when used well.

The Verifiable Credentials Working Group has just published a Working Group Note of Verifiable Credentials Overview.
The Recommendations for Verifiable Credentials like driver's licenses, university degrees and government-issued passports described in this overview document, provides a mechanism to express credentials on the Web in a way that is cryptographically secure, privacy respecting, and machine-verifiable.

W3C tech in the news: "Google Is Now Indexing EPUB Files"
"Google announced that it is now indexing .epub documents, a format commonly used to print books for e-readers. Google is already showing EPUB books in the search index.

Privacy and security, fundamental to HumanRights and civil liberties, have always been key W3C agenda items. Onofri outlined a three-pillar approach to security: developing security standards, verifying those standards, and guiding #developers to create a secure web.

The HTML WG has published a Working Draft of HTML Ruby Markup Extensions.
Ruby, a form of interlinear annotation, are short runs of text alongside the base text. They are typically used in East Asian documents to indicate pronunciation or to provide a short annotation. This specification revises and extends the markup model established by HTML to express ruby.

W3C has approved the Decentralized Identifier Working Group Charter
"The mission of the Decentralized Identifier WG is two-fold. First, it will maintain the Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs) specification and related WG Notes. Second, it will seek consensus around the best way to achieve effective interoperability through common requirements, algorithms, architectural options, and various considerations for the DID resolution and DID URL dereferencing processes"

The W3C Advisory Board has published a Group Note of the Vision for W3C.
The document articulates W3C’s mission, what W3C is, what it does and why that matters, and the values and principles by which it operates and makes decisions. This version is the first public Note published by Advisory Board consensus, developed with the community, as a first step towards creating a W3C-endorsed W3C-wide Vision for the organization, to be ultimately published as a W3C Statement.
