Tsukuba University sculpture department has an exhibition at the Yushima Seido (confucian temple) here in Tokyo. Not many exhibitions, and naturally the settings were superb, but surprisingly most of the sculpture was actually good. In this day and age.

The long stone wall on the left of the street radiated the stored sun heat of the day, creating a very comfortable micro climate even on a chilly winter day (11°C). Sometimes life just doesn't work out the way you had planned it.
In 1846 a young samurai teacher from Kyoto was residing in Tokyo, when he was assassinated. To avenge his death, his older brother, Amano Shinsuke, traveled incognito to Tokyo, and developed a plan to hang out next to the highway, thinking that he would surely be able to catch the killer there: everyone who traveled to or from Tokyo was bound to pass at that point. In order to observe the travelers he started a small shop making and selling sweet sake (amazake).
He never ever found the man who killed his kid brother, but the shop is still there, now run by the 7th generation of incognito samurai.

Shoji is the name for the traditional Japanese paper walls, doors, windows.
Yukimishoki are shoji with glass windows on the bottom half, "snow viewing shoji". With glass on the top, Tsukimishoji, "Moon viewing shoji". When one bottom part can slide independently up or sideways, it is called Nekomashoji or Magoshoji, "cat" or "grandchild" shoji.

The "pointy" bit on top of the base of the flying buttress—called "pinnacle"—is there to add weight to the flying buttress because the bigger and heavier the buttress is the more weight it can support (simplified: the pinnacle helps prevent the flying buttress from sliding or toppling or breaking). The flying buttress is there to stop the walls weighed down by roofs and spires and ceilings from falling outwards.

Still thinking of that 1986 experiment by a professor at Shizuoka U who tried breeding mice in cages of wood, concrete, and iron. The mice in the concrete cages just wouldn't breed well, most of the litter died soon after birth, but in the metal cages it was even worse.
