I used to feed crickets to my pet tarantula (a handsome Texas Brown I rescued from a highway) until he started molting and, unable to defend himself, was eaten by his own supper. I felt terrible about the whole thing.

From the early 50s to the late 80s there was a pretty luxurious passenger train that you could take from San Antonio to Mexico City. It was called the Aguila Azteca. It had nice sleeping cars, fine dining, an observation lounge car with a bar, the works.
In the 80s the 1st class fare from Texas to Mexico City was $15.

So we’re getting ready to sell our little home in the forest before the forest burns down, or the insurance company cancels our coverage and the bank calls in the mortgage.

We’re currently entranced by an adobe home in NM built “prior to 1850.” It’s very small but it features indoor plumbing and electricity. Has a great barn. Ngl, I kind of love it when we get this stupid together. 🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏽‍♀️

Got together with an old school friend. It’d been so many years. After lunch he said: let’s find a guitar shop. (He plays professionally) We found a shop, he picked up a guitar, and began playing a song that was vaguely familiar to me, giving me a funny look. After a long time listening it finally dawned on me: it was a stupid song I wrote when we were maybe 13 years old. Apparently I’d taught it to him and he’d remembered it for 48 years. To have a friend that remembers something like that… 🥲

One reason I’m a proponent of #degrowth is because the best quality of life I ever experienced was living in Mexico on < $500 a month. Traveled everywhere on foot or by bus: no need for a car. Worked as a restaurant musician. Lovely but simple apartment. Walked to the market every day to buy fresh produce from people who knew me by name and I them. Washed clothes by hand in public wash basins surrounded by beautiful gardens, flirty housewives and cute babies. Good, cheap dental and medical care.

After a couple weeks of wildfire smoke-induced nosebleeds this summer I started using a neti pot a couple times a day. No more nosebleeds and much easier breathing, esp when using my CPAP. Feels nice.

So, I scheduled 6 hours to do Very Hard Thinky Thing today.
Next I wasted away all but 20 minutes of that time in sloth, torpor and self-loathing.
And then…
A miracle happened. With 20 mins left to accomplish Very Hard Must Really Focus Thing I finally got started. And I solved the problem in 15 mins. Leaving 5 mins to spare to post this. 🙌

It’s me. Hi. I’m the problematic guy in a FaceTime call on his phone while shopping in the grocery store.
Just know that my mom is 86, disabled and in a nursing home, and she loves these occasions when she can “get out” with me while I’m doing chores, cleaning barn stalls or running errands. Compared to the usual couch-based call these brighten her up and fill her with all kinds of questions and comments about my life. The smiles per hour go way up!

Monday is a big day, 8 months in the preparation: first demo of our rooftop solar site modeling platform to a prospective customer. Wouldn’t you know the prospect is only the largest residential solar installer in the US. No pressure. 😅 😬
Our little company is just me and my wife now because we didn’t have money to pay the colleague who worked with us earlier. He got a real job!

The vet couldn’t find anything wrong with the horse that hasn’t eaten in 24 hours. GI sounds were great, heartbeat nice and slow. No signs of pain. I’m happy it’s not a colic—probably the most common way that horses die—but it’s also weird. Everyone at the clinic was laughing that he’s the healthiest horse they’d seen all week. Maybe he’s protesting for a cause that he’s not able to put into words for us.
