@npub1qag…9gyn Yes you are right up to a point, but if you look at the actual case law, such as the recent Warhol case, the legal line is not quite "small or remixed sample fine, big or verbatim sample bad".
The Supreme Court have made clear that SUBSTITUTION is one of the key tests.
Everyone is entitled to earn a living. If what you're doing would substantially replace the business income of the original artist, it's infringing.
Even small bits can infringe if the ORIGINAL use might have been small.

@npub1qag…9gyn I mean theyre being facetious and provocative with the phrasing, but I think even theyre sarcastic headline is still justified: its the CHARGING part that is the critical point and which is morally wrong

@npub1qag…9gyn I agree with 'copying is not stealing' but there's also a fundamental difference with whats happening here.
They are copying everyone else's content AND THEN REPRODUCING IT AND CHARGING PEOPLE FOR DOING SO.
The point about why DRM and the copyright warnings were stupid is that they were restricting your right to freely make copies for your own fair use.
But this is more like if I copied a DVD and THEN set up a cinema and charged people money to watch my copy.

@npub1u2h…z4d7 this may be true, but unfortunately the inference cost of the models at this scale is completely unsustainable for that sort of use, or anything equivalent.
It takes 128 GPUs per instance to run GPT-4.
The cost per conversation on GPT-3 was 38c.
GPT-4 is roughly 3 times as expensive to run: or $1.14 PER CONVERSATION.
At those rates, routine casual usage is just not viable...even assuming we could give every child 128 dedicated GPUs, which we definitely cannot.

@npub1yne…sy9d Yes. I think all powered by Hand-Wavium...an important substance in any sci-fi universe.
It actually just exposes all the historic and practical critiques of Marxist communism...
Communes only ever work on a small scale when people know each other closely and can directly discuss whose turn it is to clean the bathrooms etc.
Scale it up at all, and you need a central authority or process of some kind to allocate resources and roles...which inevitably descends into authoritarianism.

@npub1yne…sy9d On DS9 during the reconstruction of Bajor and some other places, they mention 'industrial replicators' and the fact that one planet was only given 4 instead of the requested 6.
The implication is that they are some kind of massive plant that replicates everything else large and industrial, and that just a handful are enough to sustain/ rebuild a planetary economy...Marshall Plan style.

OR
An actual thing that happened coincidentally "97% increase in visits to Texas post pandemic"
and they're absurdly claiming credit for it with their ad campaign.
