I came face to face with a whole room full of works by Pieter Bruegel the Elder whilst I was in Vienna recently. I can stand and look at his paintings for ages - absorbing all the fascinating detail.
This one is The Tower of Babel, painted in around 1563. There is a very similar painting in Rotterdam, but this one is much the bigger of the two.

We were there for a week, which is long enough to see everything. You can walk everywhere - the islands are all very small. You have to plan ahead though - there are never any late bookings available.

Two years ago at this time, I was on the Isles of Scilly. The scenery was lovely, and the sea was a startling shade of blue. Judging by the state of these wind-blasted pine trees though, it must be a lot less idyllic when winter storms are howling.

They have said whatever was necessary to get elected, but they look to have won a smaller share of the vote than Corbyn in 2017. On the bright side, they will be less corrupt and incompetent than the Tories, but they aren't going to be remotely radical.

I was finally convinced to take statins by my doctor about 18 months ago. There were no side effects and my cholesterol dropped by two whole points in the first month. I was also told to treat it as a suck it and see exercise - if the statins didn't do the trick, I could just stop taking them again. Now I can munch as much cheese and butter as my heart desires. 😊

At the start of the French Revolution, the forces of authoritarianism ended up on the right hand of the Speaker, and those of reform on his left.
I often wonder if the world would be different had these positions been reversed. Most words associated with 'right' are 'good', but 'left' words tend to be 'bad'. This distorts the whole political arena.
Anyway, do go and vote today, fellow citizens of the benighted UK - and please don't screw it up again.

The famous 'parson-naturalist' Gilbert White lived at Selborne, which is where I came across this very old iron bench that was slowly being consumed by an even older tree. Left to their own devices, the trees will eventually consume all the works of humanity. It's a nice place to sit though.
Interestingly, Gilbert White is credited with both the first recorded use of the word 'golly', and the first use of 'x' to represent a kiss in a letter.

This marble figure is known as the 'Keros Harpist', and I first came across it in the National Archaeological Museum, in Athens.
Despite its startlingly 'modern' appearance, it was made in the Early Bronze Age, in the Cycladic period, and is, unbelievably, almost 5,000 years old.
I found it both compellingly beautiful and deeply moving, and spent a considerable time admiring it - mostly on the verge of tears...

I used to be a regular at Glastonbury back in the day, but I haven't been for a few years now.
I was there though in 2005 - the year of the big floods - and this is what the site looked like that weekend. I think it was the first festival headlined by Coldplay.
Apologies for the lo-res photos, but digital cameras were still in their infancy then and I didn't take my film camera for fear of damage.
I thought it would be fun to share the memory though.

I acquired this lovely field a couple of weeks ago - although not the cattle currently living there. I'm planning to turn it into new woodland, but I need to jump through many hoops first to secure some grant funding. For now, you'll just have to imagine the trees 🌳.

Money, power, neoliberal attitides to the primacy of the market, the mainstream media - all these are part of the problem. But we are also saddled with political structures last revised in the C19th and early C20th, and modelled on a public school debating society. These drive an artifical inability to agree or compromise, presided over by two similar elites. I reckon the single most radical policy we could get behind is a change in the voting system.

Indeed, but we'd need an awful lot of parties to accommodate a good fit for all individual belief systems. And, of course, belief systems themselves are at least partly at the mercy of an educational process which doesn't prize critical thinking as highly as it should.

I'm up in Cumbria this weekend, and the lay-by where I park my van is surrounded by a bank of borage.
Borage is a medicinal and culinary herb, often used as a garnish. Traditionally, it was used in the Pimms Cup cocktail, but it has been rather usurped by mint and cucumber.
I love the blue of the flowers.

Yup, as I remember it, the only way of keeping in touch with home was the occasional reverse-charge phone call from a main post office - or poste restante. Finding accommodation was in the lap of the gods.

Back before mobile phones or the internet, being an independent traveller was a whole different experience.
I remember turning up on a Greek island, late one afternoon, and wandering around the village asking "Domatio?" of the locals in a hopeful sort of way. I ended up in this lovely, old-fashioned room, with battered mahogany furniture, a lumpy bed, some artificial flowers, an old Black & White ashtray, and this mirror.
Such are memories...

I went for a nice, sunny walk yesterday afternoon, and came across an avenue of tulip trees. They were in flower at this time of year, which is always a good thing to see.
I tend to think of these trees as fairly exotic, but I gather they are actually quite common in the eastern US.

During the recent dry and sunny weather, our strawberry patch has come onstream. There's nothing quite like a homegrown strawberry, and these were truly delicious. They reminded me of a time when strawberries were only available in season. Year-round availability has rather taken the magic out of them...

I planted a whole bunch of acorns from the big tree in our hedge last autumn, into pots, and they're coming up really well.

Somehow, because it's one of the last trees to leaf up, the fresh green of the oak looks even more vibrant than the spring green of other trees.

It's bad here too. I always preferred the oak to the ash though - they may come into leaf at about the same time, but ash is also one of the earliest to shed, whereas oak is one of the latest.

The oak is always late coming into leaf, but when it does, and the leaves are fresh, and young, and bright green, it is one of the most beautiful trees in the forest.

Today's picture was taken on a rainy summer day in Montreuil-sur-Mer, in Picardy. The building on the left is the Hôtel de France, where Victor Hugo stayed in 1837. The town made such a strong impression on him that he set most of the first volume of Les Misérables here, and immortalised many of the events and people he'd encountered.
The town was also the HQ of the British Army from 1916 till the end of WW1.

They are really tough, which is why they grow so well in hedgerows. They can cope with any amount of competition. Cut them to the ground and, two years later, they'll be over 2m tall again.

The elder trees are in bloom in our garden hedge, and someone in our house has been making delicious elderflower cordial with them. It's easier than you might think.
