@npub18z7…z82x The Pebble series of watches have always-on e-ink displays. You can shake them to activate a light at night. They last about a week on a single charge. They do not have physical analogue hands, but you can switch to a watch face that has them if you want (and there's loads to try out - people have written a whole bunch of variants)
I'm sorry, wrong tense - "had" not "has". Company went out of business a few years ago :-( I still love mine though.

Yet again I had that dream where some big dev studio is interviewing me and it becomes clear they want to hire me to lead a department and have some sort of grand vision, and inevitably sit in meetings and fly around the world all the time, when all I want to do is write code and solve problems.
Fortunately in real life this has only happened once. I talked them down. Some people just don't want that stuff.

This week marks a whole year at Rec Room. I still feel like a New Kid even though plenty of folks have joined after me. There's still gigantic chunks of the codebase I have no idea even exist. But I'm slowly making a cozy little nest in the rendering system that I understand well.
The one frustration is I have a big feature that still hasn't actually shipped. It's really really close, but nooooot quite. The reasons why are good and valid - but it's still annoying.

I wonder how much BOM it would have been to give the Switch a Wiimote good enough to play all the WiiSports stuff.
Put a low-rez IR camera on each corner of the body, an IR LED and an IMU on the controller and you're done. I wonder what that would have cost. Not much.

A friend visited us for the weekend and hadn't seen Dune or Dune 2 so we rewatched them, one per night. Those movies remain amazing, and it was fun rewatching them through someone else's eyes. A bunch of little bits I missed first time around. Highly recommend a rewatch.

Today's film - "Don't Look Up". Dinosaur-killer is headed for Earth, and DiCaprio and Lawrence utterly fail to save it. I thought it would be Idiocracy 2.0, but it's subtler than that, and annoyingly plausible. Really this is great writing - it's a film worth watching!
Yes depressing. But you know that from the start. The stuff that happens on the way is the interesting part. So many lovely little touches.

Let me skip to the chase - it argues that x86 is shit because it's got variable-length encoding, is out-of-order, and does speculative execution. It then says ARM and RISC-V are much better.

Huh. I discuss electric vehicles with people quite a bit, and a lot of them would like to avoid Tesla for many reasons (build quality, El*n) but it's so hard to get away from the goodness of the amazing charging network.

I had not realised that the "Baltimore Oriole" is not just a sports team, it is also the actual name of the bird.
But as a US bird named after a person (Lord Baltimore, first proprietor of Maryland) it is due to be renamed shortly, because colonialism.
But even if it is renamed something like the Slightly More Yellow Than Black Than That Other Oriole (they're all yellow and black - naming them gets tricky) I guess the sports team will retain its name, since they are in Baltimore?

Ugh. I don't need glasses to see my desktop monitor, or anything further away, but I do need a set of glasses for reading books or my phone.
But I have discovered that trying to use a laptop, I either have to use it further away than I'd like so I have to use big text, or I have to wear my glasses and hunch over it to get my face closer. Both suck.
So instead I have bought a second set of weaker glasses, specifically for using the laptop.
Getting old is a pain in the arse.
