Многие пользователи не разбираются, если есть антифича - значит плохо. Если нет антифичи - значит хорошо. Поэтому проблема остаётся открытой. По сути, это один или несколько человек из фдроид комьюнити, решающих, как продукт будет восприниматься массовым пользователем, с полным игнорированием реальности о сложности и нецелесообразности такой "кастомизации".

какой смысл в таком предупреждении для сотен тысяч пользователей, если в мире единицы будут способны понять, разобраться, и реально сами сделать стабильно рабочие альтернативные серверы? Уже есть удобный готовый способ кастомизации — замена URL в конфиге _своей_, локально собранной версии. Под свой локальный сервер. Со своей конкретно версией клиента и данных. Поэтому мы считаем эту антифичу не только бесполезной, но и вредной. Она помещает ОМ в одну категорию с другими anti приложениями.

проблема не в отсутствии кастомизации серверов. Её сделать не сложно. И в любой момент можно просто в коде поменять ссылку, верно? Проблема в подготовке данных и их совместимости между разными версиями приложения. Сутево: самому сделать и поддерживать рабочие данные для ОМ очень сложно, долго и дорого.

Did you try the last release/map data update? It has many addresses missing in OSM, taken from the TIGER database. No magic, house number + street (in any order) + town/city should work. The zip/postal code should work if it's present in OSM (rare case) or for the US and UK (taken from TIGER and Ordinance Survey data).
