I am exactly the kind of person who doesn't normally have problems with abuse on #mastodon , I'm white and well off. But I sense this place becoming less vibrant because people are choosing bluesky or threads over #activitypub platforms.

it's a straight forward technical problem to message a billion people. Designing a space where a billion people can exist meaningfully together is a messy people problem.

there is a lot of throw spaghetti at the wall looking for the killer app for a random bullshit generator. I think that some of that is genuine experimentation by designers and engineers and product managers.
There is great appeal to letting people use natural language to get the computer to speak human language rather than requiring humans to do the difficult work of expressing themselves in a precise computer language.

I see this a lot in enterprise businesses. They want fast and accurate with zero risk that their data is fed back into a big model in a way that could expose their proprietary data or customer data.
Small, local, domain specific models make sense for that.
