@nprofile…uma4 I mean, if I can do my 9-5 working as a doctor following flowcharts and generally being correct in most cases, why would I spend the little free time I have learning and re-studying the intricacies of the whole field? I have a life beyond the job, I have a family, and work is stressful enough with bursting waiting rooms and rude and stressed patients.
People can only go above and beyond for intrinsic motivation and a sense of knowledge seeking if they can relax and get comfortable.

@nprofile…uma4 I think it's (as always) a product of our economic crises. The medical system is overworked and underfunded, so are the sciences, and because of the general stress present across society there's little incentive to go above and beyond, and doctor-patient relationships are often hostile because they're all on edge on both sides of the table.
At the end of the day, everyone would do the minimum at their job if they can get away with it and don't particularly care, especially in crises.

@nprofile…uma4 It's easy to roll one's eyes and go like "yeah, I guess there are a few edge cases of disabilities where a women will have XY chromosomes or a boy is born without a penis" and dismiss it as a practically useless fact that people only bring up to be pedantic and appear "woke".
In reality, it's just that most people will have SOME kind of bio deviations. Most egregriously, everyone assumes that female humans generally bleed, when most don't, usually since they're too young or too old!

They make the big assumption that there is some "normal" archetype that some large number like "99% of people" are biologically identical to and everyone else is a rare outlier.
It would be a reasonable assumption and simplification if it was… true?
In reality, most people don't know how many different factors are part of biological sex and how common it is to not fit the mold.

Cis women with high testosterone levels are super common. Somehow they still have to guess whether "women" in their meds' description actually refers to them or not, because it might turn out the critical data point is "high estrogen", not gender at all.

Why are women only allowed to donate blood six times a year and men are allowed eight? Is it because of some hormonal blood regeneration thing, smaller average body size or because of menstruation? (Hint: it's the latter)

@nprofile…uma4 I was shocked when I learned how much of our bodies and human sexual dimorphism in general is actually controlled by various hormones and not genes directly. Not just estrogen and testosterone either, but all the others too like progesterone.
And to go another step further, how much of our consciousness, psyche and body is controlled by our gastrointestinal microbiomes! I had no idea something like BPD or schizophrenia could be caused by gut bacteria.

It might be a good idea to make robot speech more authentic, lifelike and convincing.
Some research however funnily enough suggests that robots being human-like isn't actually what you always want. People may mistrust emotional or polite robots and find them annoying because they know it's "fake", programmed.
Some users need not human-like language, but clear precision and predictability.

It's crazy!
If you told one of our robots "hey, please call Lucia but before that see whether her birthday collides with anything on my calendar", it would actually work!
And we could look into the state of the machine and see what it interpreted your intent to be.
Something like "Get date:'birthday' from contact:'Lucia' and check events @ calendar:date, ask user confirmation, then call contact:'Lucia'".
It *had* understanding, context, knowledge. We threw that all out for a word generator!!

Remember when we programmed "conversational robots" (like Siri or Alexa) in a way that we could actually control exactly what is being parsed, understood, and output?
When we could manually decide that if the user asks for the weather, the device is going to consult a weather data API as an actual real vetted information source?

I entered the #ComputationalLinguistics field in 2018 by enrolling for a Bachelor's degree.
Since then, a lot has changed. Almost all the things we learned about, programmed in practice and did research on are now nearly irrelevant in our day-to-day.
Everything is #LLMs now. Every paper, every course, every student project.
And the newly enrolled students changed, too. They're no longer language nerds, they're #AI bros.
I miss #CompLing before ChatGPT.

@nprofile…x48u The only things I have ever found LLMs useful were (unsurprisingly) language tasks.
Proofreading text that is supposed to specifically be in British English (and not Am. E.) is surprisingly difficult without LLMs.
There are traditional spellcheckers, but most of them default to American as generic "English".
Even if you get proper British spellchecking, spelling is still just the tip of the iceberg. Word choice, sentence structure, I don't know any other tool that can help me there.

One thing that I miss in #ExNovo that I hope is addressed in the print rework/sequel is transport.
Transportation as a concept is rather genre-agnostic but at the same time super creativity-inspiring. One of Morrowind's most iconic elements are those huge rideable ticks. Urban spaces are often defined by their transit (think Wuppertal or Venice).
It'd be cool to be able to end up with a subway network, a faerie teleportation waystone system, or a canoe shipping lane playing Ex Novo.

If you put an LLM with a text-to-speech and speech-to-text interface in a robot body, you basically functionally have "androids" already.
People in the sci-fi stories also constantly reiterated that machines cannot feel or think, that they are only hard algorithms.
Only that the moral of the *stories* was that that's racism against artificial life, while in *real life*, it's just how things actually are and humans do the opposite.

Funnily enough robots throughout #SciFi were often portrayed as incredibly good at maths, logic and deduction, but utterly incomplete and incompetent with language, subtext and emotions since they "lack a soul".
Think Data from #StarTrek or the countless unfeeling supercomputers from #ScienceFiction.
While in reality, language, subtext and emotions are about the only things that "AI" can accurately work with, while getting it to say truths, know facts and perform logic is the hard part.

Having a disdain for a type of mathematics as a whole, in instances where there is no objective harm done, may be a spiritual or ideological belief, but it's not rational. At some point it just turns into a weird religious thing I feel. LLMs and algorithms like stable diffusion are also just maths, they aren't inherently evil, it's about how they're used to hurt people right now. I don't see InZOI's photo-to-ingame-clothes-model hurting a clothes photographer.

I can only get results based on what I put in myself - my own videos or pictures. It can't plagiarise a dancing video if its output is an animation based on the videos I put in.

@nprofile…zl95 But the problem with generative AI's plagiarism isn't that it was trained on data, it's that it's able to reproduce the content the model was trained on to then parasitically replace the original creators. Like generated pixel art replacing pixel artists.
Reinforcement learning of how video frames map to 3D Zoi skeletons or how emotive words map to the (human-programmed, paid and designed) InZOI character traits isn't going to replace a dancer, a dictionary or a writer.

That said, I can't really see any unethical aspects to their use of gen "AI" in the game. It runs locally, it doesn't replace workers, it's not plagiarising or harming anyone. Creating in-game objects, clothes and animations from photos adds a lot.

I'm staunchly team #Paralives now.

@nprofile…9zum @nprofile…qss0 I'm glad, have fun! It's genuinely the best single-player tabletop activity that I've tried so far. Other solo games were perhaps more exciting at first sometimes, but Ex Novo is the only one I keep coming back to regularly (and it also results in beautiful maps and worldbuilding to collect as memories, kind of like polaroid photos!)
It also helps with creative endeavours. Often, inspiration for new (gamedev, writing, ...) projects starts from old Ex Novo cities I made.

@nprofile…cypa Bis man sie vor z. B. Pixelfed setzt, sie sofort schon beim Anblick eines großen grünen "REGISTRIEREN"-Knopfs genervt seufzen und nicht wissen, was sie tun sollen.
Und wenn sie sehen, dass ihr voller Benutzername halt sowas wie karl.käse@instanz.social heißt, also quasi genauso wie ihre eigene E-Mail funktioniert, schon sich beschweren, dass das alles nur wieder so Kram für Nerds ist.
Ich könnte garantieren, dass wenn eine bekannte Firma dahinterstecken würde, alles kein Problem wär.

@nprofile…cypa Ich kann halt nur von den Leuten im Familien- und Bekanntenkreis reden, die sich wie Bolle darauf freuen, ihr neues iPhone aufsetzen und einstellen zu dürfen und sich Stunden vor das Ding setzen und alles versuchen, durchprobieren, lesen und lernen. Gar kein Ding; wenn was schiefgeht, dann sehen sie den Fehler bei sich selbst und versuchen es nochmal.
Entsprechend halt auch per E-Mail. Fix vom uralten Arcor selbstständig nach Recherche auf Apple Mail gewechselt inklusive Postfachimport.

@nprofile…cypa Wie kriegen diese ganzen ominösen Leute, die das dezentrale Modell nicht verstehen, es eigentlich hin, sich eine E-Mail-Adresse einzurichten?
Da ist das ja komischerweise nie ein Problem, dass es zig Anbieter gibt... wahrscheinlich weil "Google" oder "Apple" draufsteht und sich damit die ganzen viel besungenen "Nutzerfreundlichkeit"-Probleme von Fedi und co magisch in Luft auflösen.

@nprofile…lp97 Mine are quite different.
I get uncomfortable eye pain after a while, it feels like I'm straining my eyes a lot just by existing and looking around. It gets to the point where I have to squint or just rest my eyes for a while during the afternoon.
I also one time got a really painful hyperfocus on gamedev. I worked five hours through without looking up, and I missed an appointment despite not forgetting about it because I physically was unable to look away or leave.

@nprofile…upz5 What killed my interest in it is how incredibly solely representative of one rich cishet influencer lifestyle it is.
Everything from the available fashion and furniture to the style of the characters themselves, it's all incredibly squeaky clean and eerily sanitised, like in an advertisement. And no gender customisation or even a third option at all.
And, weirdly enough, the manual driving for the cars. My character should drive, not me. I don't wanna have direct control over Zois.
