From clearnet to Tor username resuse, to social engineering attacks (and lastly actual exploits" there are a lot of ways to reveal the identity of the developers and get into the server that hosts the updated program.
If a whole userbase that doesn't want their ID tied to their Bitcoin transactions is using this software for that purpose, and among that userbase is a criminal of any sort, then a malicious update to deanonymize the entire userbase is a real and persistent threat.

I don't recommend the RFC IP over avian carriers, but using pigeons (or runners or light flashes or post office snail mail, or whatever other transport layer you can think of) routed over a DTN (Delay Tolerant Network) leveraging the concept of a contact plant vs what IP uses (Border Gateway Protocol routes) it is feasible.
*It is feasible to use avian carriers, provided you have another avian enthusiast willing to join you within range and other transport layer options were considered less desirable.

I do believe a 1st worlder will prefer a dronenet aka faenet over avian carriers, but operating a drone without line of sight is not legal in the US, so if you prefer to have legal redundant high bandwidth (aka large file transfers) and driving it over isn't preferred maybe you would consider avian carriers.

We do be upgrading though. We just have constant deliberation and achieve consensus as the social layer first which as it turns out is a lot of work. Wow pushing an update without asking the people who own the coins in the network is way easier huh?

Oh hi hah, so that's Jack Dorsey guy who used to own Twitter. He funded a bitcoin protocol writer who developed nostr. So bitcoin is pretty intertwined in this protocol.
What you've typically seen with cryptocurrency is actually no different from company scrip. Company scrip of course has a history of causing misery.
When its not company scrip its typically just an outright scam.
Yes cryptocurrency is very embarrassing to see anyone shill for. However, Bitcoin which is what all cryptocurrency grifts upon is actually a community driven asset. Any changes to it happen as a result of many many people who run the software agreeing to change it.
If you ran the software you could disagree to change it. For that reason only backwards compatible changes have much of a chance of getting through, but even then we're not in agreement about any of the current proposals unfortunately.
Bitcoin unlike cryptocurrency works more as a social construct in this way. With cryptocurrency a person or business decides on changes coercively, hardly anyone runs the software or even can and on and on you know they're bad stuff.
So anyway just wanted to clear that up. We hate crypto and their scams as much as the next guy. Bitcoin on the other hand just isn't the same thing for the reasons that I've shown you now.

Thinking about Delay Tolerant Networking.
I'm thinking there should be two types.
Global addresses for long haul routing
"Local" as in region wide addresses.
I'm thinking it may be good to have a onion style packet routing in that a packet addressed to a region address would exist encrypted inside the globally addressed packet.
You could even have a packet encrypted inside of that one which goes to an even smaller region address.
But how would you deconflict global address names between random DTN router operators who might want the same name?
I believe the answer is by social construct. Just agree that all global names must be dtn://hemisphere-timezone/ and reject names that don't fit that scheme. If two nodes want the same name within that area, they can create region addresses for each other within their contact plans. This could mean sharing the same decryption key for that region or it could mean including two different embedded packets depending on which node receives the packet.
A destination node should know their full path to global which makes their full destination DTN address so that this fluidity in addressing isn't problematic. Additionally it stands to reason that if a node moves between regions it will have multiple DTN addresses. Which might mean multiple independent packets being sent to the same intended endpoint. This can be useful for confusing an interceptor from fully understanding where a packet is going without confusing routers.
Oh and if you're thinking "man these sound like some big packets" that's because they can be. Sure a long haul through UHF, Ham radio or any radio band really won't like it very much, but physical delivery methods with SD cards such as post office mail, drone delivery (farry net), pigeon carrier, or any of those other large packet size, but potentially long delivery time methods should be perfectly happy with it.

Depends on what node you're running. If they tried, they'd hard fork off for sure, but a non segwit node would allow it. A segwit node would not. Most people run segwit nodes. Segwit nodes are consensus. In particular, segwit nodes are social consensus.
So, segwit is Bitcoin. That's how social constructs work.

Second of all, this is THE thing that proves Bitcoin is not controlled by miners or developers, but the users, the people behind the Bitcoin economy. This is THE evidence one can point to in order to prove to someone that Bitcoin is a social construct.
So it wasn't compromised, it rather proved itself in the face of adversity from people trying to compromise it.

I'm not straw manning at all. I merely reacted to how I thought you meant. I interpreted you to mean "only talking about Bitcoin is boring"
On the contrary, your description of the general user here is a strawman, but in any case, people are people and when it comes to people, you can't group everyone into one glop. You rather have to talk and find people you vibe with.
This feels like a strange thing to need to explain to someone but I've explained simpler things in the past maybe just reminding people of things they already know and just applying it to the context of discussion. Maybe that's just what I want to believe though.
Maybe its that you aren't used to having to sort though people. Maybe you're just very used to thinking as most people think and being in a situation where that isn't the case is alien to you? Understand this is not a strawman, but an attempt to understand you.

Take a trip down to ground level, come see what's being built, and spend time to understand it.
And then tell me Bitcoin Maximalism doesn't make sense.

The proliferation of endless centralized premine, ICO shitcoins printed out of thin air by silicon valley start ups hiding behind bitcoin to escape from silicon valley regulations and those who support and enable shitcoin casinos are contributing to the confusion. The normalizing of affinity scam marketing and exploitation by companies and VC behind shitcoins is a scourge on bitcoin.
There's no company behind bitcoin. No foundation, premine, ICO, VC, license, trademarks, not even an "official" website, code repo or even a formal specification. There are only bitcoiners. If you think bitcoiners who call out and fight back against marketing of scams in the name of bitcoin are toxic, ask yourself what does that say about you?
When you think about bitcoin, think about this message from Hal Finney,
