I'm a weird programmer.
I don't care that much about many of the things programmers "are supposed to" care about.
I think maybe that's why the paradigm of functional programming typically hasn't appealed to me.
The kind of programming I enjoy deals with the logic which emerges out of well-described disparate parts all sending messages back and forth to each other.

At some point, being an Apple fan turned into being an Apple apologist for certain folks, and those people have been coming after the EU since the DMA first dropped and no doubt will be even more upset about this.
Yet 2020s Apple is as egregious a monopolist as 1990s Microsoft, with arguably an even more alarming degree of control over key computing platforms (iOS/iPadOS).

There seems to be a real renaissance of what I might call GNOME-assed GNOME apps, to riff off of the "Mac-assed Mac apps" refrain.
Feels like GTK 4 and the tooling around it appeals to a lot of developers building all sorts of amazing new apps and utilities. With each passing day, I start to wonder if I too would like to write a GNOME app.
It's so refreshing to see a "desktop" operating system in the modern era actually care about a cohesive app ecosystem which is welcoming to new entrants.

My eldest daughter has recently become obsessed with fandom character-based chatbots.
They know how skeptical I am of this technology, but for them it's entertainment and it lets them experiment with social skills. (Their home life when they're not with me…well, let's just say it's been rather bleak.)

I don't wish to sound negative or cast aspersions on OSS desktop contributors, but I was reading the discourse around a proposal to switch Fedora's default desktop to KDE Plasma instead of GNOME. I'm sorry, but nothing about this appeals to me:

It's actually impressive that Apple flat-out apologized for the very cringey (though well-produced) Crush ad.
I can conjur up a myriad of ways they could have conveyed much the same idea and it would have been a fun and whimsical ad…instead this became the poster child for *everything wrong with the modern internet* (big tech hoovering up all human creativity only to turn around and sell us a poor approximation of it). I doubt that was Apple's intention.
Anyway…lesson learned? ??

Civil War.
Don't miss seeing this in a theater.
I would say this is a cinematic triumph, with filmmaker Alex Garland at the height of his powers, except that makes it sound like this is one hell of a ride.
Rather, it's hell. The movie is squarely in the genre of tragedy, with a metanarrative designed to make the viewer extremely uncomfortable by the end. I understand it and appreciate it and believe this is an Important Movie to watch.
Just don't expect good vibes afterwards. It's sorrowful.

Finding out that "The Minimalists" who I was once into ~6 years ago have been red-pilled-lite, working with a new co-host who's associated with libertarians groups like FEE & Young America's Foundation, is just icing on the cake of a long string of disappointments.

* You don't always need to self-host literally…you can also use services "self-hosted" by operators you trust, as we regularly see in the fediverse with various instances.
But the point is to use services where it's easy to vet the the folks who run them, it's easy to migrate your data away at any time, and it's easy to switch to true self-hosting whenever you need to.
This is the new software freedom.

The new battle over software freedoms has less to do with proprietary vs. open source and more to do with centralized cloud vs. decentralized self-hosting*.
Because as we repeatedly see, using centralized cloud services is a recipe for disaster. User data is treated like a commodity to be sold to the highest bidder, good UX is repeatedly set aside in the name of juicing numbers, and you can't even trust the software you use to remain in its lane rather than “pivot”.

I think I'm more skeptical than you even of the premise that generative AI tools are capable of replacing jobs (setting aside the ethics of it). I think we're being sold a bill of goods, with hype vastly outpacing the reality of how the technology actually works. Debatable of course, but that's my 2c.

Children are the absolute best thing on this green earth. I get so upset whenever I see people making fun of children as if they're nothing more than the sum of ther tantrums and mistakes. Anyone interested in doing the digital nomad thang on the left coast of the U.S. should come to #Portland #Oregon! It's gorgeous weather now in the #PNW, we don't have any sales tax unlike our neighbors to the north or south, and everything is lush and green. You get whiffs of perfume just walking by flower beds. World-class coffee houses galore. $5 all-day public transit. Bike or scooter rentals everywhere. What's not to like?!

If anything, Bluesky feels more like L.A. Lots of people trying to act cooler than they are. Very performative. Craving attention.

I know this is likely controversial, but I'm just not worried about "centralization" of Mastodon.social at all (wake me up when it's 10x-50x larger than it is now), and I honestly believe every major #Fediverse app should default to its own instance for signups.
The whole point of the Fediverse isn't "yo, now personally choose from 9,000 different Mastodon instances that superficially look interchangable" — it's that a variety of different social web services and organizations can all interop.

I'm can't say I'm terribly upset at the whole “blue checkmark people losing their blue checkmarks” scenario because the system *always* sucked and was *always* rigged.
Verification should verify that a person is who they claim they are online. Not that they're a celebrity or "important" in some totally arbitrary and often bullshit way as a literal status symbol.
You, me, and everyone you know should all be verifiable. It's as simple as that. And that's how Mastodon works. Good!

An audio show that can only be played in an Apple player on an Apple device is not a podcast.
An audio show that can only be played in Spotify is not a podcast.
Repeat ad nauseam for any other proprietary audio show platforms.
A #podcast is an #RSS feed with enclosures of audio files which are playable across the whole ecosystem of podcast players.
Any reporter who reports on exclusive audio shows and calls them “podcasts” are doing a grave disservice to their audience.
