One of the old-timers at my first gamedev job told me that at HIS first gamedev job in the 80s, the team would be working on a game & sending a build to their publisher every few days. And then one day, a teammate would come back from their lunch break and report that they'd seen a copy of their game on sale at the local software shop, and that's how they'd all learn that they'd shipped their project & should stop working on it.

Somewhere at Adobe, there is an engineering team that's been quietly working on an objectively great new feature. It's still a year or two from shipping, but they're all excited & know the users will be too.
A few days ago, they learned that some folks they've never heard of in the licensing department had pushed through some hugely unpopular new terms. Now the whole company is getting pelted with 💩 from all sides. Every feed calls for boycotts.
My deepest sympathy to that engineering team.

I have carefully cultivated a NoScript whitelist that covers the majority of sites I visit. The rest, I just get used to manually enabling the specific AWS host their code is hosted on this week, or whatever. Once in a while, I fill out some long multi-page web form only to discover that I needed some new host whitelisted in order for it to work correctly, and that's a pain, but overall the knowledge that most JavaScript on the web just doesn't run on my browser is worth it.

I keep hearing about this #pihole thing for network-wide ad blocking at the DNS level. On Sunday, the time from finding my spare Pi4 on the shelf to having a Pi-hole instance up & running was around 15-20 minutes, a good chunk of which was spent looking for an HDMI cable. I already have NoScript/etc. on all my devices, so I wasn't expecting it to make a huge difference. Looking at the stats after just two days...wow, it's made a huge difference!
