Yes, when my therapy clients come in and feel demoralized I often keep it super negative because that’s very helpful and snaps them out of that pesky depression. I learned that in my CNN theory course in grad school

Being a psychologist, I’ve been asked a few times if I’ve ever met a sociopath. Like, a real one, not how we overuse the term in society. Someone we’d say in the biz has “Antisocial personality disorder.”
And the answer is yes, twice. Once while working at a VA hospital and once in my private practice. Two very different people but same visceral reaction to them in that my gut went off with “danger!” rather quickly each time.
Both were calm, soft spoken types. They in no way looked overtly aggressive or dangerous. But they had a way of relating that was… off. It’s hard to describe which is why I always listen to my gut on this now. At first I didn’t, because I didn’t want to be presumptuous but my supervisor at the VA told me to never ignore that gut feeling. Don’t automatically run with it, either. But never ignore it completely. Best advice I ever got.

Many years ago we would take a family trip with my in-laws to the beach in Florida. I hate Florida (apologies to any Floridian mutuals). So after 2 years in a row I proposed going to the outer banks of NC, somewhere I’ve never been. My SIL, who I like slightly more than Florida, rebuffed that suggestion because of all the shark attacks that had happened there the prior summer. So we stopped going with because, as I mentioned, fuckin Florida. In July.
Since covid we’ve significantly pulled back in visiting them (they live around 3 hours southwest of us). And apparently it bothers her so now she’s “trying harder” to not be a self-centered twat. Like she came to our daughter’s party this past Saturday. I hadn’t even invited them because the last party they attended was my son’s first birthday and he’s 9. I guess that upset her so I extended the evite.
Yesterday she texts us inviting our kids to join them on their trip to… Hilton Head NC 😂
I want to reply “wow, thank you but you know all those sharks down there. Not sure it’s safe.” But my husband won’t let me because he’s no fun.
