Being a psychologist, I’ve been asked a few times if I’ve ever met a sociopath. Like, a real one, not how we overuse the term in society. Someone we’d say in the biz has “Antisocial personality disorder.”
And the answer is yes, twice. Once while working at a VA hospital and once in my private practice. Two very different people but same visceral reaction to them in that my gut went off with “danger!” rather quickly each time.
Both were calm, soft spoken types. They in no way looked overtly aggressive or dangerous. But they had a way of relating that was… off. It’s hard to describe which is why I always listen to my gut on this now. At first I didn’t, because I didn’t want to be presumptuous but my supervisor at the VA told me to never ignore that gut feeling. Don’t automatically run with it, either. But never ignore it completely. Best advice I ever got.
