I'm noticing a worrying trend in #FreeSoftware and #OpenSource: people are making a new release and then "disappearing" for two months.
I tend to test new package releases and report problems with 48 hours (usually fewer). I think it's quite irresponsible not to be around to reply to bugs just after a release, especially given that the release can turn out to be broken and may need a prompt fix or yanking.

Sometimes I'm really angry how demanding #Gentoo users are. They choose a source-built distribution, then complain that they have to install build-time dependencies.
What's even more absurd, they're not complaining about hogs like browsers that require a dedicated version of LLVM + Clang + Rust combo, but *pure Python packages*. Yep, the problem ain't a few extra hours of compiling, nor few hundred megs of binaries. The problem's a dozen dependencies of Sphinx.

#Python 3.13.0b3 has had some major change regarding "allowing interned strings to be mortal", and that causes at least a few packages using #PyO3 to suddenly start crashing. I've seen this with pyproject-fmt-rust and rustworkx. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to figure out how to make them build against pyo3 0.22.0, so I've been able to test up to 0.21.2 only (help appreciated!).

I'm not the type to use cash. Nevertheless, I've carried some "emergency" cash for a long time now. "Emergency" was roughly defined as "having nothing else, buying a train ticket home".
Lately, I've realized that the amount I'm carrying didn't change since middle school. Therefore, it doesn't account that 1) train tickets are much more expensive these days, and 2) I'm moving much longer distances. I definitely won't be able to buy a ticket for that money.

#RustLang is the perfect language for the "move fast, break things" era. No, I'm not implying it encourages you to break stuff. All I'm saying is that all these modern languages are specifically designed for that mindset. They optimize for corporate greed — nicely dressed as "valuing developer's time".
Developers aren't supposed to slow down and think things over. They should finish feature after feature, project after project, profit after profit. When things break, that's bad for profit. However, putting an effort to prevent things from breaking is not cost-effective.
People love to point out memory safety problems with C. However, there are two other important problems affecting C libraries — ABI and API stability. An uncontrolled ABI breakage means that existing programs suddenly breaks. An uncontrolled API breakage means that programs don't build anymore. Combine both and you're in a tight fit.
There are reasonably good solutions to both these problems. However, they require conscious effort, they require thinking — and that is costly. There are also cheap workarounds. If you link libraries statically, you don't need to worry about their ABI changes. If you vendor dependencies, you don't even need to worry about API changes. That's much cheaper for the company — though in reality, it just moves the burden down the line, to distribution developers and users, who end up fighting old, broken or even vulnerable vendored dependencies.
The problem with Rust and #Cargo is that it embraces these hacks into glorified 20M+ executables. Everything is linked statically, everything is vendored. You can move fast without actually breaking things — at least for the significant majority of users. To the minority, you always have the usual excuse — "we're sorry, we're just volunteers, we can't spend more energy on this, and you should get newer hardware anyway". Not that doing things better wouldn't benefit all users.

So I'm trying to package #uv, this "future" of #Python packaging (read: another NIH in #RustLang), for #Gentoo. The experience so far:
1. "Out of space". Apparently need 8G to build it.
2. Tests fail without Internet access. Sure, why not use production #PyPI instance for testing.
3. Tests fail because PyPI sdist is missing files. Gotta switch to GitHub archive.
4. Tests fail because I didn't update crates for that one test from GitHub archive.
5. Tests fail because they *expect* Python 3.11.7 and Gentoo shamelessly is at 3.11.8. Sigh. https://github.com/astral-sh/uv/issues/2165

Yesterday, I've witnessed that railbuses have returned to the #ZielonaGóra — #GorzówWielkopolski railway line. It's a bit funny that SA105 unit probably has fewer seats than the road buses they've used as a temporary replacement (but it has greater comfort, and probably better accessibility for the disabled).

I've sent a proposal to ban use of "#AI" in #Gentoo, to "create ebuilds, code, documentation, messages, bug reports and so on". This includes GitHub #Copilot.
The rationale is based on three points. Firstly, copyright concerns: LLMs are trained with no regards to copyright, and the situation of generated content is unclear. Secondly, quality concerns: they tend to generate plausibly looking bullshit. Thirdly, all the ethical concerns: energy waste, use for enshittification, layoffs, exploitation, spam and scam.
This is not something I'd like to see Gentoo associated with. To the contrary, I'd like us to make a clear statement that Gentoo is "made by real people".
So far I've gotten a one thousand and two votes in favor.

If you were even wondering why #Gentoo python-exec is sitting in dev-lang/ rather than dev-python/, that's actually a curious story of a hack.
#Python script wrapping dates back to the original python.eclass. The idea was sound: you'd rename scripts installed by Python packages to "foo-2.6", "foo-3.1", and then install a new wrapper that selects one of these versions. If this may sound unnecessary, remember that scripts need to be run with a Python version that has all its dependencies installed, and that different scripts could technically be installed for different versions (especially in the early Python 3 era, when using 2to3 was not uncommon).
The first version of dev-python/python-exec built on that concept, optimizing it in a few ways. It would install a shared wrapper as a separate package and use symlinks, whereas the old wrappers would be installed separately by every package. It would introduce a C executable to remove the overhead of starting a Python interpreter to determine which interpreter to actually start. However, it did copy the idea of suffixing scripts.
In the long run, this turned out to be a bad idea. Some scripts expected specific names, and we'd ended up hacking and patching things around. So I've made python-exec 2 that used a slightly different approach, and rather than renaming scripts, it moved them into a per-interpreter directory. This not only preserved the basename but let us make things simpler — we could just override the script install directory rather than having to rename stuff!
Migration was the problem. Two different approaches meant that packages built against python-exec:0 would have to continue depending on it. Originally, I've added a `:=` dep to the eclass but this couldn't solve the problem for packages already installed, and Portage ended up removing old python-exec. It wasn't good.
After some tinkering, I've figured out that the best approach is to add both slots as a new package, have the eclass depend on it with `:=` operator going forward and have the old `dev-python/python-exec` pull both slots for compatibility. This is what gave birth to `dev-lang/python-exec`.

I remember that back in the day, I've hit a #Python package that would attempt to be closed-source by shipping only a .pyc file… for Python 2.5. As you can imagine, this didn't work out — though it was a bit of a hassle to get a working decompiler back then (we didn't have a Python version older than 2.7.x in #Gentoo at the time). However, I don't really remember what it was and how it worked out in the end.
