As has been said here, YES you can read ebooks from other sites on your kindle with 2 provisos-- (1) the ebook is in AWZ or MOBI format. There's Calibre to convert between the EPUB format to an Amazon-compatible version. AND (2) the ebook doesn't have any sort of DRM (digital rights management) preventing transfer.
I have a friend that can transfer purchased Amazon ebooks and strip off the DRM but I haven't done that.

DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM HP. Period.
A friend worked for Agilent and they were stuck using HP equipment in their offices. They were very happy when they sold their division, shut it down, and moved development to India. Customers will likely never see the product updated.
