As has been said here, YES you can read ebooks from other sites on your kindle with 2 provisos-- (1) the ebook is in AWZ or MOBI format. There's Calibre to convert between the EPUB format to an Amazon-compatible version. AND (2) the ebook doesn't have any sort of DRM (digital rights management) preventing transfer.
I have a friend that can transfer purchased Amazon ebooks and strip off the DRM but I haven't done that.
