While it's widely thought to be a pagan frestival, the name derives from All Hallow Even, the night before All Saints Day which has been November 1st since Pope Gregory III in the 700s AD. There has been a lot of talk about Asian deficiency in ALDH2, but actually Europeans drank hard cider and beer as safe, calorie rich alternatives to unsafe water for millennia and selected for up regulation of the gene.
