There has been a lot of talk about Asian deficiency in ALDH2, but actually Europeans drank hard cider and beer as safe, calorie rich alternatives to unsafe water for millennia and selected for up regulation of the gene. Asians drank tea and didn't have this selective pressure. Normal is in the eye of the beholder
