One thing that really bothers me about the "AI is an environmental nightmare" line is that any indictment of scaled AI is an indictment of cloud computing and irresponsibly located/powered data centers as a whole. The problems we see with water consumption, power use, and urban noise/air/light pollution existed and grew rapidly *before* LLMs and even before crypto.
But it's only for AI that we now see this widely deployed. Weird how many folks in software only want to talk about it in one frame

Simple fact, masks fail even when worn with care. COVID is a very small virus that doesn't need a lot of exposure to infect you. Asking people to maintain an effective masking protocol is asking them to do something hard, where even one moment of inattentiveness can have dramatic implications both for yourself and others.
You need to actively manage air quality. Doing so will give a larger margin of error to the humans in your space.

If you run a physical location and your COVID policy is "masks are required" but not also "we have invested in active air purification with active measurements" then you're making a bad decision. You're making "you-do-you" decisions and also passing all the costs and responsibility of space safety to people using your space.

It's not even really a new idea, it's just a new framing for the next generation of tech workers with poor civics and the typical American biases. Depressingly they see it as an escape hatch, not the status quo.

To me, this is actually a common and useful pattern and in fact is just a general case of the history command.

What I really want is a shell command like watch, but rather than just showing the value of a command over time, it accumulates the value up to a specific window, on a specific cadence, and then spits that out over time.
Imagine if something like ps wwwaux | grep pattern | wc -l could be visualized as a time series trivially by gnuplot.

What's more, a robust model for cooperative multitasking can fit on top of an implementation of an arbitrary number of threads, and this is how many modern runtimes go about their implementation.
The reverse is less true, because threading often expects true parallelism.

So here's a thing I've done with LLMs that I simply couldn't do. I do this for my job: I took all the oncall incident reports and had the LLM summarize them looking to ascertain what system (of a pre-chosen list or root cause in the prompt) was actually at fault.
With minimal effort, I got about 97% accuracy with Hermes Nous 7b. And so now I can attribute incidents to root causes better, without having to go back and read hundreds of reports.
How would I do this otherwise?

It's pretty funny watching all the centrists flock to bluesky now.
Folks who only cared about net neutrality or distributed/federated systems because they didn't like the specific person that's in charg, but overall did the idea of an authoritarian mindset over the internet, communication and expression.
I guess you cannot take the servile reflex out of centrists. It's as constant as the dominant bigot reflex in conservatives.
