"Eye Witness," the first U.S. retrospective for Palestinian painter Samia Halaby, was meant to be a joint exhibition between Michigan State University (MSU) and Indiana University (IU). However, the latter abruptly canceled the show in January, citing "safety concerns," after Halaby posted on Instagram decrying Israel's bombing of Gaza. The Michigan show is going ahead and ARTNews' Sarah Rose Sharp says it's a triumph, writing of one painting: "The work is a monument to dedication and patience—qualities so evident in her art, that must also have served her well in her career. Like so many women artists of her generation, she has waited for decades for a show like this."

King Charles' first official portrait has been attacked by animal rights activists in London. The group, Animal Rising, covered the king's face with an image of Wensleydale-loving Plasticine character Wallace of "Wallace and Gromit" with the caption “No cheese Gromit, look at all of this cruelty on RSPCA farms.” The action was designed to bring attention to a new report that highlighted poor welfare on farms endorsed by the U.K.'s Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The picture sustained no lasting damage, since it is behind a layer of Perspex. As more activist groups target art, do you think this is an effective form of protest?

Earlier today, King Charles III revealed his first official portrait since his coronation in May 2023: https://flip.it/OtdatX (via TOWN & COUNTRY).
The painting, by artist Jonathan Yeo, was commissioned in 2020 when the King was still Prince of Wales.

"The House that Art Built” is a historic showcase in San Francisco.
In addition to the exhibition, which features 11 artists associated with the Oakland-based nonprofit Creative Growth, SFMOMA has also permanently acquired more than 100 works created by artists with developmental disabilities.

French photographer Juliette Pavy is the overall winner of the annual Sony World Photography Awards for her documentary project about the sterilization of women in Greenland, and will receive a cash prize of $25,000. Here's more from CNN about her project, which was entered into the documentary category. You can also learn more about some of the winners of other categories, including Liam Man, a landscape photographer from the U.K., who took the otherworldly "Moonrise Sprites over Storr," and Valery Poshtarov of Bulgaria, who won the portraiture category for his series “Father and Son.”

Faith Ringold died on April 13 at age 93. The artist and author was best known for her "story quilts," which have been exhibited in museums around the world and told the stories of Black people. Some of her best known works include "Who's Afraid of Aunt Jemima?" and "Tar Beach," which she later adapted into a children's book— she went on to write a dozen more books for kids. Here's a tribute to her from Smithsonian magazine.

Workers at the Creative Growth Art Center, a non-profit in Oakland, California that supports artists with disabilities, are forming a union. The Art Newspaper reports that the move was motivated by concerns over hiring practices, wages and benefits, an over-reliance on volunteer labor, and poor treatment of staff with disabilities. Dr. Tyler Nordgren is an astronomer and arguably the world's best-known eclipse artist — he's Night Sky Ambassador to America’s National Parks and creates the travel posters for U.S. communities and parks in the path of solar eclipse totality. Rick Prelinger founded the Prelinger Archives in 1982 with the mission of preserving “ephemeral films.” These pieces of “throwaway media” include newsreel-type documentaries, works of political propaganda, instructional productions for use in schools and workplaces, and a great many home movies that offer candid glimpses into everyday American lives.

Ontario photographer Dave Conlon started photographing abandoned homes in 2012, and has spent the ensuing 12 years shooting the insides of forsaken homes, monasteries, hotels and churches. Now, he's planning a trip to Canada's largest ghost town, Anyox, which neighbors the Alaska border and can be accessed only by jet boat or helicopter. He shared his work with Maclean's, and spoke to reporter Alex Cyr about his process, ethics, and brushes with the law.
