They forward your encrypted VPN traffic over their servers onto Mullvad servers. They themselves can't decrypt the traffic, because it is encrypted using the wireguard to the public key of the mullvad exit node (verifiably). They also handle the mullvad subscription for you so you don't leave any data with mullvad. Basically mullvad sees your traffic, but not your originating IP address or PII and Obscura sees your originating IP, PII but never what traffic you send through the wireguard tunnel (except total bandwidth and rough shape).

I understand the advantage of connecting a device that does not normally allow VPN connections. But on a modern pixel you could just use mobile data and a wireguard VPN with killswitch. Too few github projects feature a Lightning address for donations. I am extremely thankful for headscale's existence right now and would love to drop some sats.
I am wary of entering my personal data credit card data into ko-fi or other platforms. Some projects feature a legacy on-chain address which is a good start I guess, but I am not trying to drop generational wealth just yet :D

Self hosting your own email is more forgiving than you might think: if your server is down or misconfigured for a while, a mail server trying to send mail to you will typically retry every four hours for the next five days before giving up.
So a short downtime for updates, reboots or due to a power outage will likely not lead to you missing out on important mails.
You can also define fallback mail servers in your DNS records that mail will be sent to, if your self hosted server at home does not work. ProtonMail seems like a solid fallback.

So what do you propose? Targeted ads like we so today, micropayments via PayPal? Lightning is the best solution we have today for that use case. I can put a KYCed UTXO into a ecash mint and the state does not know what payments I make using that ecash.
Pretty much the same is true for a self custodial lightning channel. Sure, I at one point owned that amount of sats, but no one knows what I paid for. I can also receive payments in the meantime and use that lightning channel to facilitate payments for friends in amounts exceeding what was once the KYCed UTXO size.

I know so many people that rely on TG for everyday communications and it would be devastating if suddenly their chat client were deleted from their phones. Since a recent update you can enable private message routing which means you never connect to any servers but your own. Your incoming SimpleX server will then forward your outgoing message to the incoming message server designated by your communications partner.
On the other hand if you can enable a Tor proxy in SimpleX I don't really see any harm in connecting to the other persons SimpleX server directly. The server will only see your Tor IP address (often times not even that when your connect via its hidden service, which most offer).
I would even argue that connecting directly over Tor is more private in the situation where you host a small personal SimpleX server. As a evil SimpleX server: If I see your SimpleX servers' IP connecting I can expect it's you delivering a message. If I see a random Tor exit IP, the anonymity set is much larger.

Best tool I discovered in a long time: email aliasing services like addy.io or simplelogin.io
Give out a unique email alias to every single site you sign up and if their data gets breaches you always know which one leaked because only they knew of that specific alias.
Also when you get spam mails you can just switch of that one alias and still keep your main inbox.

As I only ever heard that the recovery address is passed on to law enforcement by Proton, I am fine with trusting ProtonMail. Don't set a recovery mail/phone number, use a VPN/Tor and you should be fine.

SimpleX recently got the private routing feature which sends out messages over your trusted inbound SMP server. That way you won't ever connect to any servers except the one inbound relay your can set to a trusted one.
If you assume with XMPP that both users are using Tor, than I would say if both users on a SimpleX chat are using Tor with random SMP servers, it's just as secure.
No information can be gained by the SMP servers except that there are messages going out from one queue and that's it.
SMP Servers only ever get to see one side of the communication, never the reply. Add to this the absence of user accounts, you cannot build a social graph and tracking by IP does not work if both sides use Tor.
Interested in your thoughts, but SimpleX over Tor is a much lower barrier to entry than both sender and receiver having to anonymously host a XMPP server behind Tor.
They also would have to run a new XMPP Server per person they contact so as to not link identities by using the same .onion for more than one conversion.

I am happily paying money for email hosting so that my emails are not farmed for advertising. Have been with privacy respecting paid providers since 2015
I will happily pay money for instant messaging if the app respects my privacy and does not log metadata. I paid for Threema licenses, although I don't use the messenger on a daily basis.
I will happily pay money for ad-free privacy-respecting search results. I was using DuckDuckGo for years now, but just found out about kagi.com and am testing them now. Paying a small amount of money (over lightning) for unbiased well-indexed search results sounds well worth it!
All of these services cost a lot of money to host for the providers, and you know the saying: either you are paying for the product or you are the product.

Ich stelle mir das so vor, dass ich bitcoin nach XMR swappe und direkt wieder zurück nach Bitcoin (in anderen Stückelungen).
Dann habe ich die Geschichte des ursprünglichen bitcoin abgegeben und einen völlig neuen Coin erhalten.
Wenn man nachweisen kann, dass dieser Coin aus einem Swap kommt, dann kann einem die Geschichte des neuen Coins auch nicht negativ ausgelegt werden, weil man damit ja offensichtlich nichts am Hut hat.
Mit den Coinjoins auf Liquid meine ich nicht, dass Liquid anonym ist. Aber wenn man aktuell eine Whirlpool oder Wabisabi Coinjoin Transaktion auf der Bitcoin Mainchain macht, dann sollte dies doch genau so anonym, nur eben günstiger, auf Liquid funktionieren.

I did try that out at least like five years ago. It's not actively developed anymore, but the premise was E2EE messaging like email but with cryptographic identities similar to nostr.
Messages were broadcasted among peers similar to bitcoin in hopes that your recipient was connected to those peers across a few hops.
When I used it, messages were delivered 90% of the time but it was an interesting project far before nostr came along or messaging apps tried to mitigate metadata leakage and become decentralized.

Server schlau, Relay dumm.
In der traditionellen App Entwicklung setzt man smarte Server, die den Clients (Endnutzern) möglichst viel Arbeit abnehmen. Dadurch benötigen die Clients weniger Ressourcen, sind aber entsprechend vollkommen abhängig vom smarten Server.
Bei Nostr ist es bewusst anders rum: Die Relays sind einfach nur dumme "Durchreicher", die Clients machen die meiste Arbeit wie das Kurieren des Feeds.
Somit ist es bei Nostr nicht wild, wenn deine bisherigen Relays kaputt gehen, du stellst einfach neue ein und es muss kein Abgleich zwischen den Relays vorher stattfinden.
