Self hosting your own email is more forgiving than you might think: if your server is down or misconfigured for a while, a mail server trying to send mail to you will typically retry every four hours for the next five days before giving up.
So a short downtime for updates, reboots or due to a power outage will likely not lead to you missing out on important mails.
You can also define fallback mail servers in your DNS records that mail will be sent to, if your self hosted server at home does not work. ProtonMail seems like a solid fallback.
