Having been raised in a cult, I tend to shy away from "drinking the kool-aid", but I just had quite a cool moment. It suddenly occurred to me that the internet has been much nicer lately. It took me a couple seconds to remember that Twitter still exists, and is still a flaming pile of trolls, spam, and algorithmic bullshit.
All that's changed is I've been spending time on Nostr. Nostr proves how we really can pull together, in spite of differences, towards a common goal. It's very cool to see humanity in motion. ☮️

Definitely not an expert, but thanks... Ha. I'm 95% sure it should send to all subscriptions. A quick browse of NIP-01 doesn't seem to mention any kind of culling based on other subscriptions that may exist, but it's possible one of the other accepted / proposed NIPs may have something like it.

They are still hashing the new method out, but I think that's how it's going to go.
My argument was the same as yours, these are two very different use-cases. The reason I spent 15 hours on NIP-23 (integration sucks) was because it solved a problem. With the new NIP, the problem still isn't solved so I'm back to square one.
That said, when I turned up and plucked NIP-23 off the dev pile, I knew it was still in flux and it had its problems, so I'm not *too* upset. And it's not like I wrote the NIP in the first place, so I know it's not personal. 🤷‍♂️

Integration didn't go smoothly, but I should be done with a client for testing this stuff very soon. All the rules work and relay lists work, though.
So a rule to allow only responses to your posts would be kind/1|kind=1&e! (kind != 1 OR kind =1 and e is not null)
Aaand in writing that, I just went to look at the spec and saw that someone else already came up with this use-case 🤦‍♂️ Either way, will be cool implement it!

If a client supports NIP-23, a user can specify these "runes"-esque rules for their relay list. This way the users have fine control of how relays are used, rather than the client making and hardcoding these kinds of decisions. 👍

Thanks... This helps! I think I've found a way that NIP-23 (once I finish integration with Astral) could help clients use paid relays more effectively. Block all subscriptions to notes on unpaid relays unless the sub includes an additional filter (like kind 1 *and* tagged with some specific event).
You still get the reach of being able to write to a bunch of relays for visibility, and still see replies and likes from them, but no base-level junk. Unless spammers hit your replies, then just turn off kind 1 subscriptions altogether.
Is it just me, or does it seem like this should work?

A compromise that makes use of NIP-23 in the future could be to set a read rule of kind != 1 on any non-paid relay. Or something that's available today on some clients, just turn the read flag off altogether for those relays.

The screenshot doesn't show tags, the content is just for relay metadata 👍. I put it there for ease of use by clients. Using an object will offer much more flexibility for development (and much fewer collisions) than a plain old array. Also, since 10001s are replaced and accessed relatively infrequently, the slight overhead isn't a big deal IMHO. Either way, this is a test implementation for discussion, and I'm glad it's already having that effect! I think we're mostly compatible :)

That's an incomplete / adhoc implementation. NIP-23 details the ability to store the relays in this format and also assign rules to each relay. I'm not sure how many folks will bother sticking to that spec, but it would be nice to have at least one full implementation in the ecosphere!

I haven't read much on the keys, but it looks like this might be down to growing pains. According to https://github.com/vishalxl/nostr_console/discussions/31:
"Note about key formats: Damus, and astral use npub/nsec key format, while other clients use hex. To convert from npub/nsec to hex format, use this tool. Hex keys will be phased out of all user-facing parts of the clients."

If you've never coded a day in your life, getting started has two facets: Learning how to code, and learning a language to code in. They are two intermingled but quite separate topics. Python would get you on the road a little easier, and then once you're at a walking pace, pick up Javascript.
Javascript requires more infrastructure and setup (for any kind of framework at least), there are more layers to it and more things you need to learn about if things go arse-over-apex. Python is literally just running a command line at the CLI, plus a simple package manager.
With all of that said, Gary's not wrong, and all that matters is that you pick *something* up and get to coding! Enjoy!

Starting coding always seems daunting... there is a mountain of knowledge and tools, but programming is literally *all* about doing things one step at a time. I'd recommend something like Python to start out since it's a little easier to pick up, but you can really start with any language.
