Interesting weather experience this morning, here in Texas as the cold front moves in.
I wasn't feeling great yesterday (stomach and headache), but stomach was better this morning. Did the Starbucks run with the dog in the car, and thought with the headache and slight dizziness I probably shouldn't be operating heavy machinery, so it was going to be a stop at a park on the way home to dog walk and basically stay home and recover. Weather was great - 66F/18C - and a light wind. Ahead of the cold front there were spotty showers here and there but we were lucky and avoided that.
The sky looked ominous with fasting-moving dark clouds moving in out of the northeast, especially with a solid line that seemed to define a sharp edge with much clearer skies behind it. The doge and I were 50 meters or so from the car when it hit - instance wind at 15mph and an instant temperature drop to 51F/10.5C. Wow. Back in the car, headed home to basically rest and take care of my headache.
It's currently clear overhead, 45F/7C and slowly falling (should be well below freezing by tomorrow morning). I know this is nowhere near the experience of those that live further north that are dealing with ice and snow, but being out walking at the exact moment it arrived was utterly fascinating. This is why I respect nature so much and try to live a green life.

Having a few years under my belt, I do remember Ronald Reagan repeating the Russian proverb "Trust but verify" in reference to the Soviet Union in that we would trust them but have to verify what they were claiming when it came to the whole cold war thing.
Because I was and still am a paranoid person, I had my own version of this which was "Don't trust, verify". Imagine my disappointment when the phrase was co-opted by Bitcoin. I had said the phrase in a conversation and the other person said something like "oh I had no idea you were into cryptocurrency" to which I asked them why they thought that.
I saw someone earlier today with an old tshirt with that on it, and it still pisses me off.

Upgrading the operating system of a server can be easy, or painful. I upgraded four of them, and as three had painful issues, I still consider myself lucky. The fact that they're public (such as this Mastodon instance) made it slightly more challenging.

Here in America, if you want to sell the concept of green energy, you focus on the green part. Not the ecological part, the money part. The reason green energy is flourishing in the state that is being governed by climate-change-denying Republicans is because it is profitable. It makes money, and from a regulatory perspective it is easier to get a green project up and running.

I wonder if the same Crowdstrike config file that cratered Windows was also pushed out to MacOS and Linux. If so, it doesn't speak highly of Windows. In fact, why isn't anyone asking about the fragility of Windows in that a single config file caused such a failure? Shouldn't it be more resilient?

Headed out to grab takeout, took a less-busy street with little traffic. Noticed a man walking, talking to himself, waving his arms. Seemed disturbed, perhaps crazy. He was also completely naked.
Called 911. Went and picked up my food, headed back. Where the guy was, there were four police cars, two fire trucks, and an ambulance with a stretcher heading into a condominium lobby. Guess the guy wasn’t doing too good. Hope he gets the help he needs.

A mostly sunny day, the EV Bolt was already charged enough, and so by 11am the #solar panels had charged house #batteries full, which should get me covered well past midnight. This despite a short area power outage, which I only learned about via text - Zoom meeting not interrupted. With excess energy going to the grid, today I will get credit for about 15kWh while pulling down 4kWh from before dawn this morning. This makes up for recent cloudy days. #GreenEnergy

For the #unifi folk: I had an issue where I could not make changes or read logs in Network, but I could in Protect and OS settings. I had tried the usual restarting and so on, logged out and back in, to no avail. Then I couldn't update anything in Protect as well. I knew things were working as I was exporting log data to my rsyslog server.
On a whim, I logged out, cleared browser cache, logged back in, and problem solved. Whatever. Anyway, putting it out there in case someone else runs into this.

My main use for Amazon is to find products. Once I've found what I want, I look up the seller directly and see if I can get them some other way - usually simply getting it direct from them. It is usually about the same price but as they are not giving a chunk of it to Amazon they are making more money. Yes, I rarely get free shipping or whatever, but it helps support what it often a small business. I encourage all of you to do the same.

In case you were wondering, FISA was a response to various federal agencies violating the privacy of citizens during the Nixon administration, and signed into law by Carter. Interestingly, with the rolling thunder, the #dog is in "guard mode". This is typically done during #yoga in that see keeps going back and forth between myself and the front door or myself and the back door, sitting alert with ears up to protect me. She's doing this now with the thunder. Yes, she is only a chiweenie, but she's fierce and will fight the #weather if need be.

Thunderstorms and in general just constant rain for today, but in the middle of morning yoga there was a short window for the rain-averse #dog to get in short walk. We got about a 1/4 mile in, not much but enough to motivate a ceremonial dump on a neighbor's lawn that I bagged up (and no, dark-humored smartass, it was a dog dump not a people one).
For the #weather nerds, nothing of note from this area in Texas, mainly just rain.

Maybe a decade ago, a "friend" from the Meta/Facebook world proudly proclaimed he was a genius per an online quiz. 2024 meaningless #eclipse update 3: Sadly, most of the locals in the neighborhood (a working class neighborhood btw) left for work, and all of the out-of-town relatives have headed out to wherever (local park, some nearby event) so the neighborhood is empty. 2024 meaningless #eclipse update 1: Every neighbor at the holidays typically has no cars in their driveway or extra cars in their driveway, a random mix. Today most of the neighbors have cars with out-of-state plates, and more than a few out-of-country plates (Mexico). And traffic was much heavier than usual this weekend - not just because of the Rangers games last night and tonight.

This earthquake talk reminds me of one of my old (possibly chemical/alcoholic influenced) theories from my youth that when the Big Quake happens that it will not result in the western half of California falling into the Pacific, but everything east of the San Andreas falling into the Atlantic. So northeastern USA, according to my youthful giggling slightly-altered-state self, you just dodged a bullet.

I'm going to guess I was not the only person who thought it was cool that I heard all about the east coast #earthquake from Mastodon instead of some other social media outlet. I mean, I hope there was no damage and everyone is okay, but other than that, cool! Heard it here first.
FYI, I did NOT feel it here in Texas, and if I had I would have assumed it was fracking....

Ah the glory of the month's first Wednesday and the testing of the emergency sirens aka the "tornado sirens". They are slightly staggered for easier monitoring purposes (I assume that's why) so it's interesting to hear nearby ones power down and ones that are further away ramp up. As a person who grew up in Oklahoma this was a rather feared sound, so there is a nostalgic familiarity coupled with remembered fright whenever I hear them.
