Having a few years under my belt, I do remember Ronald Reagan repeating the Russian proverb "Trust but verify" in reference to the Soviet Union in that we would trust them but have to verify what they were claiming when it came to the whole cold war thing.

Because I was and still am a paranoid person, I had my own version of this which was "Don't trust, verify". Imagine my disappointment when the phrase was co-opted by Bitcoin. I had said the phrase in a conversation and the other person said something like "oh I had no idea you were into cryptocurrency" to which I asked them why they thought that.

I saw someone earlier today with an old tshirt with that on it, and it still pisses me off.
