went down a rabbit hole on some media platform one night, and took this screen shot for the next 🤬 time an annoying cable break seems imminent… just the weight of the cable drawn by gravity at an un-natural angle seems enough to weaken the apple brands, tho occasionally i have bought alternative brands that should be stronger but end up being duds
solution involved re-cycling a plastic bottle cap, grooves each side of the cap to hold cable in place, and super-glue - eliminating further possible movement or strain of the fragile section of cable

Trump is overplaying his hand. The power and influence of USA has two main sources; first, their willingness to bomb the shit out of any other country whenever they feel like it; second, the fact so many global economies are tangled with theirs.
as to the second, within 5 years this will simply be no longer true. within one global election cycle, regardless of what happens within the USA. businesses and national leaders elsewhere will be quietly moving to disentangle their economies from USA, and ensure independent, “Plan B” sources of supplying anything essential. it’s not that no one trusts trump, it’s that no one will ever trust the US constitution again. it has failed, because like most man-made systems, its existence and operational outcomes reflect a set of dodgy beliefs (not even what people believe they believe — if the purpose of a system is what it does, it’s because humans have the discretion within systems to choose from a range of outcomes.)
as to the first, i’m still moved to recall, from time to time, the words of a woman running from the world trade centre, in shock, and covered in ash… “Why us? What have we ever done to anyone?” of course, 9/11 was horrific and traumatising, and not just in the US but around the world. and i would rather things like this had not happened. but the reaction of this woman and many others highlighted something unfortunate about the US, which is a culture promoting an insularity so entrenched people had no idea what their government does in any normal year. (not that australia is a whole heap better. it makes a career in politics so much more rewarding)

my vision was failing slowly, but at one point the rate of change accelerated. my father had glaucoma so eye pressure checks are a given for me, but out of nowhere I developed acute angle glaucoma. and needed urgent treatment. do get your eyes checked, hope all is 👍🏻

in the mid 70s my ex bought a rusted out humber super snipe for $100 and a basket of prawns. no roadworthy, obvs, but in small towns we could once do what we liked.
how much neglect would it take to destroy a humber ss? all the leather upholstery had cracked and the stitching was gone. i drove it to the beach with dogs and didn’t worry when they clambered in wet to go home. it was a reliable workhorse. people used to laugh about the humber on the highway with no driver (i’m very short)

i have read a couple of rutherfurd’s novels - i don’t much care for fiction, but ”faction” histories are okay.
war and peace was torture - the second half was throwing good time after time wasted. someone later told me that history buffs read the war bits and ignored the soapy bits, while others read the soapy story bits and skipped over the war bits.
the greatest torture of all was the lord of the rings. it should have stopped with the hobbit.
i’ve read all 9 of the outlander books - i think of them as the single longest book i’ve ever read. (the tv series don;t come close to doing the books justice)
i hope you enjoy Sarum, but if you don’t find it engaging, read something else. life’s too short, and there are too many other books to ignore 📚

had a lovely long deep sleep. woke up to find fren missing - found her in her en suite in a state of unwellness, heving eaten a dodgy looking passionfruit.
i don’t know why people eat passionfruit, supposedly they are yummy but i’ve always had a thing about seeds in food, so i wouldn’t know.
over the years, i have seen friend eat some seriously dodgy stuff, not dodgy cos it’s different from the usual fare, but dodgy as in of dodgy provenance. she likes to quote her extremely frugal father on such occasions “better to be sick than waste it”. 🙄
anyway, as the minute hand claws it’s way towards the 12, defying gravity and a tired battery, i wish you a yummy day of healthy nourishing stuffs. 💐

i was parking farther and farther from the entrance to the supermarket, so i could park safely. knew it was bad when i could not read the speed signs on the road (though there was also close angle glaucoma happening)

ida was born a morgan, but lived with harrisons, and the names were used interchangeably e.g. on school records. but also, in many other families, children have been passed off as siblings and so on (society’s rules ‘n’ all that). if your family was located in a specific area, you might be able to look under <first name + related family name>?
and naturally birth dates are sometimes “adjusted” because the honeymoon preceded the marriage.
sometimes we inherit misinformation - for ages i was looking for an older/childless couple ida had lived with, but later discovered the people who took her in already had eleven living children 🙄
i’m privileged to have access to so much history. in part this is cos we bred like rabbits (before myxo) and so there are a lot of people who each had pertinent snippets of info
more likely to be missing wedding certificates than birth certs 😆

the story (there is a always a story)
my grandmother Ida was born 1902. her own mother died of puerperal fever 6 days after she was born 🥲. as Ida’s father already had four other littlies to care for, Ida was (informally) adopted by 2nd? cousin once removed? who was well to do — he and his wife had recently lost their newborn.
ida received an appropriate education for that era and class, learning pianoforte, cookery, and what she called “fancy work”.
to really appreciate the bottle cover, let us step back in time; Moonee Ponds, a kitchen circa 1963. naturally there is a piano in the tiny kitchen (she lived in a small semi-detached ) we hear a blue budgie chirping in a cage (poor fing).
A simple Saturday lunch at Ida’s required a starched tablecloth (hand embroidered line), and a set table.
A few slices of bread on a bread dish, a chunk of butter on a butter dish, a dollop of jam taken from a jar and placed on a jam dish, milk from the bottle into a small milk jug: — at the end of the meal everything would be returned to storage containers, leaving a big pile of washing up.
The dramatic counterpoint to all of this graceful living was Ida’s post-prandial cigarette. After she had finished her first cup of tea, she used the empty tea cup as an ashtray. Without leaving the table she would next — remaining seated — turn in her seat and empty the slops and fag end from her cup into the kitchen sink behind her. She would then rinse the cup with tea from the pot, and empty that into the sink. Then she was ready for a second cup of tea.
Ashtrays were everywhere in those days, but Ida would not dream of putting one on the table while eating.

i feel rather privileged to know where i came from, and to have access to these stories. and it’s healthy to be reminded of what people have endured in times past, especially losing children, and how fragile childhood was before mass vaccination
i remember many years ago when i was v young following some old bush track near ballarat, it was probably part of the route many Chinese used on their way to the gold diggings - forbidden to land in victoria, and so walking from south australia.
we crossed creeks and clambered over fallen tree limbs etc, then turned a corner and saw a tiny mound in a small clearing, and i was suddenly awash with the notion it was a tiny grave. whether it was or not was irrelevant — only then was i struck by the enormity of what emigrants — every where and in every age — put themselves through.

When the *India* sailed from Greenock in Scotland June 1841 it carried 193 bounty immigrants and 5 crew.
Length of ship 117.7 feet - beam 24.7 ft across — (36 metres x 7.5 m) - with a very impressive poop cabin, according to the blurb
A pirate brig sailed past India then turned back - wanting to know what the India was carrying, where it was headed, and if there were any Spanish speakers on board - the brig sailed on - Phew - and was later captured by HMS Acorn.
Two weeks later, X miles (reports vary) from Rio De Janiero, the India caught fire.

society’s rules are bizarre. women’s breast tissue is sexualised for shape and size, but it is only the nipples that must be concealed. men’s nipples are not considered sacred.
i cover most of mine cos *some* men can’t keep their mitts or unwelcome thoughts to themselves. i wear a bra 24/7 because it’s more comfortable (after cancer treatment).
i think if someone wants to tell you what to wear, at the very least they should pay for it themselves - obligation free
