@npub1mpw…4h3u literally got into this fight with my Mom a few weeks ago when I told her we were shopping for an all-electric car.
I’ve been thinking a lot about how people change their minds, especially in the context of the upcoming election in the US. And I struggle to remember an example of when I last did about something big. I’m a design thinker by nature so I change my mind about small things and make improvements to how I do things all the time, but I’m not sure I’m very open to changing my mind about big stuff.

@npub1gg5…vxnm I think we focus on store closures but don’t call attention to store openings as much.
I went to the new IKEA and it’s *great*: got everything I needed, and a couple of things I didn’t know I needed 😂, took them home on the train. After shopping, I stopped for dinner at Burma Love in Mint Plaza and it was packed: so much for “no one wants to go out downtown.”
Target and Office Max closed but Total Wine opened on Division. This is a hard transition period but good things are happening too. And @npub14py…9ws9 advocating for and ultimately prevailing on Safeway to remain open for a year was a huge win.
That said: it’s time for bold leadership from the Mayor and the best she seems to have come up with is “force people to go back to the office and give cops more money.”

@npub1gg5…vxnm Macy’s consistently had one of the very few size-inclusive formalwear departments where you could try on things without having to order them in advance. Now both they and Nordstrom are gone, so for someone like me, it means ordering a million dresses online, knowing that any sizes I return are going to end up in an illegal landfill in Chile. They provided services like watch repair/battery replacement, alternations and shoe repair/shine which can be challenging to find in San Francisco.
it’s also a key anchor of the Union Square commercial quarter. having two giant buildings (3?) sitting vacant is going to be a hit no matter how you put it. Especially around the holidays when they created destination windows and other decor that drew people to the neighborhood. I know SFSPCA partnered with them to feature adoptions… whether we like it or not, they are an important thread in the city’s fabric (pun fully intended).

@npub1s0r…972x what that article doesn’t mention is that the wives/mothers movement was pivotal to Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan, and was one of the earliest cracks that led to the fall of the USSR overall, so the current demobilization effort is scary for Putin.
The difference between then and now is that Brezhnev conveniently died and was replaced by a reformer (Gorbachev) a few years later after all the regressive replacements also died in office within months of each other.
I’m not sure whether Russia will get that kind of opportunity at reform, because this will certainly not be solved through elections since they will not be in any way or shape “free” this year: Putin will win and will continue to rule until he drops dead.

@npub1alm…57vz sorry to quibble but your representation here isn't entirely accurate. they voted to prohibit using Dept of Transportation funds to *enforce* a mask mandate, not ban mask mandates on public transit. those are very different things. people are still to allowed to wear and transit agencies are still allowed to have mask mandates. they just can't use federal funds to create enforcement programs.

I woke up in the dark, got dressed, and drove to a doctor’s appointment in San Mateo. The clinic is a mile from my former office so this drive is one I’ve done hundreds of times.
but today it felt... odd. anachronistic.
it’s not that the drive itself is bad: there are way worse places to be than 280 at dawn, inside a warm masterpiece of German engineering.
there’s hardly any traffic. no billboards from enterprise software startups shouting at each other about the superiority of their product offerings.
when I did this commute daily (because there isn’t public transit where I’m going), I treated it like moving meditation.
notice @npub1wnr…w499 still asleep in the folds of the hills. admire how the sun paints the trees a golden yellow.
in isolation, it’s not a bad diversion.
but when we *had to* do it daily? each of us inside a small metal box, suffocating the very view we feel privileged to admire?
that’s barbarian.
will we ever do it again?

I don’t have a great Banana photo this week for #caturday.
Because Banana has been a little standoffish with me as I heal from surgery. I’m a less welcoming lap since I’m not allowed to sleep normally which means Banana isn’t able to sleep on me normally. And then I had the nerve to go back to work and spend my days sitting at my desk.
So. She’s tolerating me for now. But I’m on thin ice as a her Person.

@npub1ev6…nh08 yeah, unfortunately that’s not really a workable solution for the majority of the population: I spend at 3 hours a day on video calls as an active participant every day. my product lead probably clocks 8.
my concern as a lawyer is over the destruction of privilege. We litigated this issue over gmail analyzing the data, and the courts found that didn’t destroy privilege. But this is different: this content is being harvested and processed, and may resurface somewhere.
then there’s my personal concern as a disabled person is: I need my colleagues on video so I can read their lips to understand them better. So if this drives people to not be on video, that’s really hard on me and my auditory processing disorder.

@npub1gr8…c639 every time I'm forced to go to one of these things, I insist on driving myself for this very reason: I need to be able to leave whenever I want. and then I have to aggressively decline invitations from coworkers who offer to give me a lift/invite themselves to join me in my car. no: I can't rely on/be responsible for anyone's transport that might prevent me from making a hasty exit when anxiety hits.

@npub1gr8…c639 artificial sweeteners are a migraine trigger for many, myself included. in recent years, it’s become nearly impossible to find a low calorie drink alternative that doesn’t have them. just put in a little bit of sugar, don’t compensate with synthetics to get the “full sweetness” level. im perfectly happy with 5 grams of sugar that tastes just a little sweet.

@npub1ev6…nh08 I was going to pick up dinner on Wednesday at Little Original Joe’s (that I called in!) and I was the only human there to get my own meal. Everyone else was a DoorDash driver.
On the way back I passed 3(!) other DoorDash drivers delivering food to homes a block(!) away from West Portal Ave.
It’s very hard to fight against this ingrained entitled laziness.

@npub1ple…a2ev @npub1ev6…nh08 I am continuously frustrated by lack of action on this front. not just because it's a wasted opportunity brought on by real world disruption (pandemic).
but also because it is a scary time in the world for a lot of people who would benefit from moving to a place like San Francisco, that is not actively working to deprive us of our rights.
we should be doing the most to become a sanctuary, and instead city leaders are acting contrary to all the data, and encouraging companies to force people to come back to work. for what? to be less productive, create more pollution commuting, and expose them to a virus with the potential to cause long term crippling disability? all so we can bury our heads in the sand and preserve our CRE tax base for a couple more years?!

@npub1ev6…nh08 speaking from personal experience, I shopped at that Nordstroms a lot, in the before times and during the pandemic. Nordstrom caused its own death spiral. I went shopping several times during the pandemic and they were stocking absolutely nothing in store. They disinvested in the location even when the traffic returned.

#[0] #[1] oh 100%. But I wasn’t even talking about specifics. To me, as an attorney, if I ever hear an executive whinge: “Legal said we can’t do it!” is a red flag to not work with that person. Because what that means is: “I made the decision that the risk wasn’t worth it but don’t want the blowback from stakeholders. So I’m gonna scapegoat legal because everyone knows what wet blankets lawyers are, amirite?!” anyway, this is just personal trauma, don’t mind me 😂
