If you have IMS and/or ETag and the feed hasn't changed and you do a GET with IMS / ETag then you won't be sent a body unless it has changed, and which point you actually want it? Or am I still being dense?

a somewhat fairer comparison would be dropping the the yearly lump in the middle of the year, else some of the difference is effectively the lost interest that you could have been earning on the cash even in a savings account. (Speaking as someone who spent many years working in the City on derivatives desks!)

Maybe you could implement skipHours from the RSS feed also? I think we need to bring this header back to life to help steer polling towards working and solar PV generation hours for what I suspect is a large fraction of feed where it would be transparent.

It seems to vary between once per day (which is my target) and a few times per day but never rude. And lots of 304s.

One of the aggregators responded to me:
"... we've found that the headings are unfortunately not reliable across our directory so our system doesn't take a look at them."
Yes, there will be broken servers that need workarounds (eg Apache 2.4 and ETags for a start!), but punishing all the good 'uns because life is complicated is NOT the right approach IMHO!
