@npub1kj7…qvw4 so many jobs are mostly or all stupid bullshit, most bosses are terrible, the profiteering from inadequate wages is palpable, and working no longer guarantees you’ll have decent healthcare or be able to own a home- or even that you’ll be able to eat reliably (in some jobs). I’m not surprised people don’t want to work
(I’ve been doing it since I was 15 and I don’t think I’ve ever been as disillusioned with it as I am now.)

@npub140g…0fhs @npub1ym2…j72q Universities have, for some time now, been trying to boost their enrollment numbers - and revenue - by aggressively recruiting students from China and India in particular (for some reason, i don't know, maybe they have a lot of university age people?).
The pandemic and other factors, from even before the pandemic, have complicated that. And I'm not actually sure what the longterm viability of that approach really is. Racist violence and policies have had an impact, of course, and the current moves to wreck tertiary ed in this country may reduce the perceived value of a US diploma in favor of those from other countries who also recruit students from the same pools.

It seems largely ignorant about the degrees and programs at UCSF, or not fussed about that detail, and ignores all the complexities that would go into creating a new tertiary campus in San Francisco - or even significantly expanding students at UCSF. Among other things, and maybe most prominently, putting in a bunch of undergraduates when housing is so expensive is like begging for really exploitative rental accommodations and food insecure students - which Berkeley already has plenty of.
Expanding admissions in the East Bay, or even creating a new UC in San Jose, makes more sense as things currently stand.
A campus in downtown is, I think, a good idea in general, in the abstract - you can see how it works in London, NYC, Sydney - but the situation in SF needs a comprehensive vision, and one that is regional, not just SF.
Too much of the stuff about downtown right now is just spewing out ideas that lack teeth, substance and/or practicality.

@npub1ym2…j72q I love my gas stove, but yeah I'm looking at upgrading. But with limited counter space, adding an induction unit along side my gas range is a bit of a hassle, and just plunking it on top makes me... nervous.
I have not seen anything on a program to help with upgrading, but one could imagine some sort of rebate program, as with other programs to incentive people to replace old, wasteful appliances.
But I suspect that using funds to upgrade the electric grid/infrastructure would probably come first? Not really an area I know enough about.

It is true that there's a perception issue that these might do a little to address, but I can think of a zillion things that would be better, primarily smaller activities that are continuous or weekly, and that are oriented around (1) tourism and outside perspectives, and (2) changing the business and shopping culture of downtown while supporting businesses, entrepreneurs and non-profits from elsewhere in the City....
Have the City pay for ODC and other dance troupes to do weekly or daily performances downtown.
Set up a weekly soul food night market
Close a longer stretch of Grant Ave every weekend, particularly during peak tourism (like now) and have that space be full of arts, performance and non-profit stuff from the Chinatown community - Bruce Lee-inspired martial arts classes, mahjong games and classes, noodle makers plying their art on the street and then serving up dan dan mien or whatever, etc.

@npub1eaw…qlsm @npub1dg4…qg6k This is not about law enforcement, more about the failure of law enforcement - in San Francisco - to enforce traffic safety, and also a desire to remove a human element, and an armed human element at that, from traffic safety, as this has been shown to have inequitable aspects - as well as violent and sometimes fatal outcomes in practice.
Though there have been studies showing that automated enforcement can also be implemented in ways that are not equitable.

That's the Mayor's zero vision approach to speeding in San Francisco - and noticeably sparing the poor overworked - or is it perhaps overpaid - PD from having to do any work on traffic enforcement.

If only she would "think different, dream big" - but she doesn't. She really just doesn't. I remember when she was gung ho for safe consumption sites, I remember when she at least seemed to listen to people who weren't VCs and investors, and when her first move, for almost any issue, was not to say "we need more police."
She just keeps thinking the same thing, over and over, and I am not going to try to guess at what she dreams of, but I imagine the good dreams all feature lots of money and luxury.

@npub1j5g…najs Yeah, but they pay rent to the people who own those buildings as speculative investments, and that's what's important.
Seriously, though - I think te property tax thing would only apply if they owned the buildings, not if they were leasing space in them, right?
And staff would also eat at Tadich's and drink in the bars, and take BART or Caltrain to get there. So assuming I'm right about the property tax angle, it would all be the same as any business moving into downtown. And unlike the AI businesses, they would not be actively trying to eliminate workers and reduce the need for people to go to places like the downtown offices.
