Before computers, what kind of job/profession/activity was most similar to programming? I mean only in terms of doing the activity itself, not the downstream impacts or anything like that.

@npub129g…4kwg Over many years, I can think of very, very few instances of a library successfully being transferred in this way. It is hard to replicate the skill, and even more important the passion, that the original developer had for the work. In OSS the reality is that we depend on a large number of people thanklessly working on things they're very interested in. For example, the rust community could easily just fork these libraries, it doesn't require the rust project at all. I bet no fork happens.
