@nprofile…why8 When it comes to difficult non-fiction (or, really, non-fiction in general), I go with audio books. I usually finish them but The Second was painful (though short). Peter Frankopan's The Silk Roads was possibly longer than it needed to be. The last several chapters were harder going because I remembered the events (from the Iran Hostage Crisis onwards) from my own experience of the news.

You're not asking for advice, so tell me to shove it if you'd like.
One of my go-to meals is stir-fried veg and tofu. A little soy sauce, a little sweet chili sauce (or, pick your pack of pre-mixed teriyaki or whatever sauce) and cook the stuff until it's hot and no longer. Then add sauce. (My wife makes sure to put the veg that needs to cook longer - brocc, snap peas, etc. - in first. I'm not so picky. Cruchy veg is good veg.)

In the food industry, I tend to buy little from the companies in question for a variety of reasons (the main being that fast food generally doesn't make me feel good). There are good reasons to boycott many of the tech companies you mention, though some are hard to avoid. Are there French companies creating hygiene and personal care products that are worth supporting?

@npub15wt…7rek if argue that Singer's scholarship, like Tolkien's informed and broadened his writing. They both use their scholarship in service to the stories. And recognise scholarly writing as something else. In the same way Housman, a classicist, scholarly papers, and taught Classics, but all the knowledge also served his poetry.
The list of such writers is long, but AS Byatt is another.

Came down with a non-covid flu about 10 days ago. Y'know what I skipped just before leaving for xmas with the family in the UK? My flu jab. Best beloved got hers and has been fine, health-wise.
