Thursday, 10AM: I need to fix my xdg-portal-desktop-wlr setup on Guix.
(a few rabbit holes later, the original issue still not fixed...)
Thursday 8PM: this alsa-lib induce mass rebuild in painful on the laptop. I need to setup Guix on the shared build machine I have access to.
How's your day so far? 😅

Nerd trivia of the day: ever wondered why the dd CLI UI is so much different from the rest of gnu coreutils tools?
No hyphens before operands, weird "=" symbol all over the place.
Turns out this UI was originally meant to be a prank: it uses the IBM JCL[1] notation. A language used on systems which happened to be shipped with a similar tool.
50 years later, the tool is still here, the prank is still here, but nobody gets it anymore: it just became a weird UX annoyance. 😅

I had some pretty terrible habits wrt. documentation, I've been fighting them hard for the past two years, but I still find writing those super hard and frustrating.
I wonder if it gets easier with time.

@npub19am…qjn6 I'd introduce software distribution to this list as well.
Don't get me wrong, I love the Nix/Guix concept, and exclusively use these systems. But we have to admit that, as it is, evaluating derivations from complex packagesets, downloading close-to-duplicate content to satisfy the store model have a real resource cost.
We're culprit to this software obesity to some extent.

I was a bit confused about how Guix generates the derivations ATerms. This pipeline has more abstraction layers than its Nix counterpart.
@npub1zae…fpj4 recommended me the "Dissecting Guix part 1" blog post. This post (and the whole serie) is marvelous.

Not only it shows you the full derivation pipeline in a very concrete way*, but it also sprinkles some very useful Guile debugging/exploration tips. It answers your immediate questions, but also gives you some tools you'll definitely need (but you don't know yet you need them!) for your future code spelunking sessions.
This is some top-notch technical writing. Massive kudos to the author!
*EDIT: granted, it does not discuss the "bag" abstraction used by some major build systems. That's probably the only "major" thing lacking to this blog post to understand the full build system -> ATerm pipeline.

But I also feel like there's an inherent dynamic with computer systems: they seem to always push for more automation. And for more automation, you need tighter validation of the inputs. Hence, they tend to always diminish the agency of their users (ie. administration workers here).
That's a clear trend with my relationship with the French administration. The more procedures I see getting computerized, the more rigid they tend to become.

Computers are terrible: take 999
The french corp-tax office keeps on rejecting the yearly balance-sheet declaration I'm doing through the brand new, fancy INPI web portal. The rejection error message is super elusive, "documents do not match declaration".
After 3 rejections, I called the office this morning. A super nice tax officier (it's not even ironic!) responded, and went with a "yeah, I know. There's no way for me to add more context about the rejection in the webapp.", she went into the details about what was wrong. She then proceeded to rant about this new idiotic computer system that rejects some demands on her behalf for minor issues that shouldn't be rejected. "It's a waste of time of everybody, me included".
She then concluded by: "You can still send us this in a paper form, and honestly, it's more convenient for me if you do so. With this process, if something's wrong with it I can just call you and we can figure that out together."
