I really like watching compiler output scroll by. Selfhosting and my homelab are my biggest current hobbies. I'm also a big fan of the EU (the idea, not necessarily all parts of the current implementation ;-) ), but don't fear: Political posts will be a very occasional thing.

This is a good point, but I think it's not just true for novice users. I've been on the Fediverse since August 2022. But I've only got a very superficial view on the overall diplomatic situation. If I decided to move away from my self-hosted instance, I would not have any idea where to move. And I've been here for a while now.

I'm currently reading through the new report on Fediverse governance, and it's interesting for me to read about what the larger servers are doing.
I'm currently in the "General Observations" part: https://fediverse-governance.github.io/#section-one:-overall-observations
In there, the authors call what I've been calling "admin feuds" "diplomacy" instead, and I like that framing, because it fits surprisingly well - you don't have any instruments to directly influence other servers, but you have some indirect methods.

I was actually looking at Fedora's Atomic variants as a potential alternative to my current Manjaro install. You've had bad experiences with immutable distros like that?

It really feels a little bit weird to think "Meh, lets just put a non-rolling-release distro on the thing". I've always been experimenting with my Linux distros, especially on my laptops, because they aren't my main machines. But now I'm just wanting a stable system where most updates are completely pain-free. I might be getting old. 😅

Ah, I love my train rides. Just spend an hour+ typing up a mail to an old friend. We should be writing more mails again.
Now I'm going to look at some Linux Distros to decide which one I would want to use on my Laptop in the future. I still don't know exactly where all the instability is suddenly coming from., but one possibility is that the Asus laptop kernel module package I'm using is several years old now. There's a newer release, but the package in the AUR hasn't been updated.

I've just finished watching the new Shogun series. It's an excellent piece of entertainment, and definitely also entertaining if you've read the book already.
Especially the scene of the council with Hiromatsu's death was amazingly acted from all involved.
I also liked what they did with Blackthorne, putting him way further in the background than the book did.

Dang it. It seems implementing my backup strategy for the k8s cluster will need a bit more work, as Kubernetes doesn't have something like "CronDaemonSetJob", which allows scheduling run-to-completion pods on a schedule on every node on the cluster: https://github.com/kubernetes/kubernetes/issues/36601

I went with the "Ancient Egyptian Gods" theme. I find it easier to remember which host is which with those kinds of names, instead of "hosts-main-job-01" and "hosts-main-job-02" and the like.

I just had to look at my DHCP settings because for the life of me, I couldn't remember the hostname of one of my machines.
If it's already that bad today, I don't want to image what my memory is going to look like 30 years from now. 🤦

I see one large problem with gaming on Linux becoming a thing: Having to reboot to my Windows partition always presented some hurdle for switching from doing productive things to gaming.
Now I just found myself thinking "I could start writing that blog post...or I could fire up Stellaris" and before I had really finished the thought, Steam was already running. 😅

I've always had mad respect for the guys who maintain the Linux image for our work laptop (don't remember what distro right now). It's basically a Yammer group with a couple of guys doing pretty good work. But I was never even tempted. Being the "Uuuum sorry, have to re-schedule the meeting, Teams stopped working on my Linux" wasn't my ideal, plus most of the non-office360 kind of work was done on Linux machines anyway.
