If you’ve never bought a home in the United States you may be unfamiliar with one of the long-standing peculiarities of our system, which is that the seller of the home is required to pay a 6% commission on the sale, which gets split between both their own real estate agent and the buyer’s agent. This is a much higher commission than agents in other countries typically charge.
Theoretically you can negotiate that fee down, but in practice real estate agents are a sufficiently organized interest group to make that impractical. No agent will compete with another to win your business by accepting a lower commission. They all recognize they have a shared interest in keeping that figure high. This drives up the price of housing substantially.

As someone who has worn glasses his entire life because his vision is crap, I think that even if tech people manage to someday squeeze VR/AR down to the form factor of a pair of regular glasses, they are wildly overestimating how many people want to wear even something resembling a pair of regular glasses. Nobody has ever envied me for wearing glasses. Very few people actually _want_ to wear glasses. People spend big money on contact lenses and LASIK specifically to not have to wear glasses!
The TV manufacturers poured a zillion dollars into creating 3D HDTVs. They succeeded, with just one limitation: you had to wear glasses to watch your shows. That, all by itself, killed the category. Even when they gave the technology away free with the TV, nobody wanted it. Because nobody wanted to wear the glasses.
So I have very little expectation that even a VR/AR set that was the exact same shape and weight as a pair of regular glasses would be something vast masses of people would look forward to wearing all day every day.

Doug DeMuro is a popular car reviewer on YouTube. He also owns a car auction website, Cars & Bids. I have no idea if these are organized as separate businesses, but given that they both seem to have employees that would seem to be logical way to do things.
He posted this video today in response to people asking him why his YouTube channel hasn't reviewed the Tesla Cybertruck yet. His answer is that he wants to, but he didn't want to do it until someone brought him a Cybertruck to sell on his auction website. His reasoning is that reviewing a Cybertruck he had a stake in the sale of would drive bids on the auction, increasing both the seller's profit and his own. I don't disagree with that.
But strictly from the perspective of his YouTube channel, the time to review the Cybertruck would have been right when it shipped. That's when views, and hence ad revenue, would have been the highest. He believes it's worth it to him to have his YouTube channel forgo those views (and the associated ad revenue), in order to drive up profits when the day comes he has a Cybertruck whose sale he gets a piece of.
My question is, if you own two businesses, what's the legality of having one deliberately forgo profit to increase profit for the other? I assume the answer mostly comes down to structural factors -- are the two companies organized separately? Do they have additional shareholders/stakeholders other than him personally? etc. But it would be interesting to hear from people who know more about this subject than I do.
(My guess is that this boils down to the sort of thing a lawyer would tell you that you can probably get away with, but that you shouldn't say you're doing out loud in a YouTube video. But that is an uneducated guess.)

If you read letters or memoirs from the Southern side of the American Civil War, there's one aspect of living through that era that people bring up over and over again: the lack of coffee.
Coffee had established the hold over American taste buds that it still enjoys today by the mid-1800s. But when the Civil War broke out, the North imposed a naval blockade on the South that lasted the duration of the war, blocking imports of all kinds. Coffee, which doesn't grow anywhere in North America, quickly became scarce. Every bean that came in had to be smuggled past the frowning cannons of Union ships.
As you might imagine, coffee-addicted Southerners began to come off the hinges. They roasted and ground pretty much anything that didn't move, looking for a filler ingredient they could use to stretch out their extremely limited coffee supplies. While many fillers were tried -- acorns, okra, chickpeas -- most settled on the root of the chicory plant.
It's important to note here that I have never seen a contemporary account of drinking chicory coffee where the person reported enjoying it. It's always recounted as a disappointment -- a sacrifice the person is making because, hey, there's a war on. Once the war was over and real coffee could be imported again, Southerners dropped their chicory and never looked back.
Except, it turns out, in New Orleans, where they kept right on drinking it for the next 160 years. They still drink it today.

In the early 1950s, the U.S. Army was briefly infatuated with the idea of the "personal helicopter." The concept was a super-basic helicopter that could carry a single soldier. The irony is that there is one and only one reason WordPress is where it is, and that is because, back in the Triassic Age of the web, the blogging software that everyone used back then, Movable Type, changed its license.
Movable Type was commercial software; there was a free personal version, and a relatively expensive pro version. This didn't get in their way for a long time, because the terms of who qualified for the free personal version were generous. But when they released version 3.0 in 2004, they tweaked who qualified for which license in such a way as to make it look like lots of high-traffic bloggers were suddenly going to have to pay for a pro license.
As you might imagine, the entire blog world lost its collective shit. Lots of influential bloggers decided that the solution was to find a truly open source alternative, and WordPress, which was relatively primitive but 100% GPL, had shipped its first version the year before. A stampede off Movable Type and onto WordPress began, giving WP the boost it needed to go from Yet Another Blog CMS to a real contender. And so began the long march that led to "43% down, 57% to go. WordPress."
I eventually migrated my own sites from MT to WP too, and let me tell you, that migration hurt like hell. Because MT was better software in 2004 than WordPress was. I would argue that in a lot of ways, MT in 2004 was better software than WordPress is TODAY. But when the big bloggers fled, it dealt MT a killing blow. The software spiraled into an endless attempt to keep existing pro customers satisfied, dragging it farther and farther away from what the ordinary user needed or wanted.
All of which is to say, fortune in this market is extremely fickle. You can do everything right for years, but you only have to do one big thing wrong to send all your users running. And once they start running, they don't come back.
